Forgetting Lenny

Chapter 7

Eliza's POV (Science Class, The day Eliza and Lenny are presenting their project)-

"And that is why we think it would be easy to use biotechnology for curing colorblindness in dogs." I said, and signed, as me and Lenny stood in front of our science class. We worked really hard on Saturday, and we got our project done. After that, we hung out and he taught me some more sign language, so that during the project, he could sign and I could interpret.

Lenny looked at me and signed "Ask if they have any questions?"

I nodded ans said to the class, "Any questions about our presentation?"

A sophomore girl named Amanda Vanmark raised her hand. She is probably the most popular girl in our class. She has blonde hair and brown eyes and is the star of all the school musicals. Her boyfriend is the quarterback on our undefeated football team. She is also one of the meanest girls in our grade. Lenny pointed at her, telling her to ask her question.

Amanda flipped her hair and said "So, like why didn't you do your project on curing deafness or whatever is wrong with Lenny?" When Amanda spoke, she bounced her pencil on her mouth making it impossible for Lenny to read her lips. Lenny turned to me, lifting his eyebrows, asking me to repeat what she said so he could answer. I shook my head and turned away so he couldn't see my mouth. I said to Amanda,

"Because we didn't want to. Lenny is more than his hearing disability." But while I said this, I signed,

"Yes, I have a dog and that is why I chose to do this project." Lenny looked at me with a confused expression, but I just smiled at him. Mr. Pierce told us to sit down, and we went back to our seat. When I sat down, I raised my hand to go to the bathroom. Then Lenny signed to me that he had to go the bathroom too. Luckily, I had learned a lot of sign language and I can understand it pretty well. I nodded and Mr. Pierce gave us both hall passes and he headed out into the hallway. I walked in front of Lenny and headed towards the girls bathroom. I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around to see Lenny standing in front of me. He signed,

"What did Amanda say?"

I signed back "You saw what I said, she asked why we chose this project."

Lenny shook his head and signed back, "No. I kind of saw a few of her words. Why are you lying to me?"

Now Lenny seemed to be getting angry at me. I signed angrily, "Why are you getting so mad at me?"

Lenny shook his head and started to walk away. I grabbed his arm and forced him to face me. I signed again,

"Lenny, why are you acting so angry at me? "

He shook his head again and started to sign something then stopped. He then signed, "Because your not being honest with me!"

"So what? Amanda's a bitch and she asked a mean question! Why would you want to know what it said?"

"I'm not stupid! I can handle what a teenage Barbie has to say about me!" Lenny signed so hard that it made a loud noise whenever his hands touched and I was starting to get angrier. I signed back,

"Lenny, your acting crazy. I don't want your feeling to get hurt."

"Well, I don't want you to try and protect me. I can protect myself!"

"Why are you so angry at me?"

"Because I like you and your treating me like I'm your little brother."

"I'm sorry! I just wanted to make sure your okay! Wait, you like me?"

"Of course! Your one of the best girls I've ever met!" I started to turn to walk away because I didn't think that I could stay there. Lenny grabbed my arm, turned me around and kissed me. I shouldn't have, but I kissed him back. I pulled back, remembering Derek.

"I shouldn't have done that." I signed, with tears in my eyes."I have a boyfriend and-" I stopped abruptly and ran into the girls bathroom. I don't know what to do now, but as I ran into the bathroom I smiled a little and thought to myself, He really likes me.
