Katie’s POV

I was driving around Huntington Beach looking for my best friend. I had been calling every one of Ruby’s and my friends to ask if she was with them. But no one had seen her and I couldn’t find her either: Not at the beach, not in the park, not at Johnny’s.

I felt really bad about what happened. I actually felt really sick to my stomach and just remembering the death glare she gave me when she had left the apartment made me dizzy. I hated it when we fought but we had always pulled through and made amends. But this time was different. I could feel it in my guts that the bond between us was broken, that I had lost my very best friend. Just because I wanted to be with my brother without hurting her.

I know it was wrong to go behind her back but she was so heartbroken over Jimmy. I wasn’t even allowed to mention his name and now she was acting like she wouldn’t give two shits about it anymore. Sometimes I wanted to smack her to wake her up from her self-lying behavior. She loved him with everything she had and her denying it was absolutely ridiculous.

I was driving along the Main when I saw a TacoBell. Oh yes please. I hadn’t eaten for almost two days now because every time I would only spot it my stomach would go crazy. But right now I was absolutely starving. So I pulled in the parking lot and went inside to order two of my favorite tacos. I was in heaven when the flavors hit my tongue and for a short period of time my mind was free of all worries. Happy as hell I skipped back to my car I drove off to my apartment.

“And here she comes.” I looked up from pulling my keys out of the lock of our front door only to see a fuming Mitch standing in the middle of the room glaring at me.

“Excuse me?” I asked confused and dropped my bag on the couch.

“I don’t have the time nor am I in the mood right now …” I opened my mouth but he continued, “… I want you out of this apartment. You have an hour to pack and leave because then Ruby’s shift will end and I don’t want her near her.”

My heart stopped. He was kicking me out? Because my best friend and I had a fight that was NONE of his business?

“Are you serious?” I asked in utter disbelief.

“Do I look like I’m joking?” No, he looked more like he was ready to kill me. Squinting my eyes I stepped closer which was a mistake.

“I have no idea what Ruby told you bu-“ His broad hand left a stinging pain on my cheek that brought me to tear up a little.

“Don’t you dare call her a liar!” Mitch came closer and grabbed my chin to force me to look at him. “One hour. And don’t forget anything of your crap.” He whispered viciously. Letting go of my chin harshly he grabbed his leather jacket and left the apartment slamming the door shut.

I was still in shock about what just happened. Mitch was a really sweet guy and here he was slapping me across the face and kicking me out. Shaking and with tears streaming down my face I threw my stuff in my suitcases and carried them to the door. I thought about leaving a note but on a second thought these people were dead to me.

After all what I had done for Ruby, all the years I have been fighting for her, trying to get her out of her hellhole. I even brought her here to California. Twice! I gave her money, I dedicated my life to be there for her and now that I did something for myself – finding my family and reconnecting with my brother – she is stabbing me in the back.
