The song for this chapter is "Dark Horses" by Switchfoot. I seriously love this band. Also, I went back and changed the song for chapter 46, because I found one that fit it better. :)
Only the final exam's left for my class now. The huge project that failed me last semester has been passed with flying colors, and I am beyond relieved. I didn't realize how stressed out I was over it until I got the grade back. That was part of why I took so long to write this chapter. I don't write well when I'm high strung. :P The other part was trying to figure out how to write "steam punk". If any of you have suggestions to make it better, please tell me. This is my first time writing this... time period? genre? (What do I even call it?)
So, if you're wondering where Mot and Tom are going, let me tell you a story. Their destination was originally intended to be built in the series, but various things ended up making that not happen. I asked Chimalus on tumblr (one of the leads on the S2 bts team) about what it would have looked like if he had gotten to build it. "Steam punk" was his answer, as well as it being cut from the top of a giant mountain. Props to him and all the other lovely bts people out there. These next two chapters are for you. *raises an imaginary glass of sparkling grape juice in a toast*
*Tom's POV*
I gripped the wall of our cave with one hand and held a blue mage light in the other as fury continued to rain down outside. We could hear and feel impacts through the walls of our prison. Or tomb, I thought, becoming slightly claustrophobic. Between our current predicament and the lingering fear of Dianite somehow having tracked me down, I stuttered when I asked, "W-what was that?"
"That's a new one by me," Mot said, sounding shaken as well. "I've never seen a meteor shower actually hit before." He chuckled nervously from his side of the cave. He had sat down and leaned back against the cold stone wall with his eyes closed inside the hood of his light grey coat. He opened them now and pinned me under a critical stare. "What was that? I've never seen you freeze up before."
I looked down at my hand holding my mage light to see it still trembling. Man, what happened to me? I used to be so good at putting up a front. I must have gone soft with Dianite gone. "I have no idea what you're talking about—"
"Bull," Mot, said in a bored voice.
That irritated me. I imagined walking over there and wiping that superior look right off his... A rather large sounding meteor hit very close then, causing the stone around us to shake and dust and a few pebbles to fall from the ceiling. My eyes widened in panic, and the shaking in my limbs grew worse. My heart rate would have been through the roof if I still had one.
Mot noticed the shaky light and held a hand out as if to calm me. "Easy there," He said softly as if speaking to a frightened animal. If Alyssa loved animals as much as Sonja did, I guessed he would have had to deal that at some point. "Why are the meteors freaking you out?"
"D-Dianite's fireballs sound and look just like 'em," I said before I could catch myself. I bit my lip when I did. The first rule of being a Dianitee was to never talk about Dianite business with outsiders. Yeah Mot was this dimension's Dianite champion, but that was still different. I wondered what he had heard about my Dianite from the priest; I doubted that he ever talked to Josh, Tony, and Nade while he was in our world. I knew they would have avoided him, especially with Dianite not being completely dead.
Mot narrowed his eyes at me. "You were his champion," He stated more than asked.
I chuckled nervously, deciding I couldn't possibly get more doomed than I already was for killing Dianite. "That didn't mean anything when I messed up."
