Elliot's POV

It was a blistering hot Thursday morning in June, and the sun had just risen in the clear blue sky. Everyone in the neighborhood was still in bed, peacefully snoozing.

All except me.

The streets were quiet. Which is rare in Pasadena, California. There is always a deathly silence in these hours of the morning, and they're the times I enjoy the most.

Looking at the clock and noticing that I have to go to work, I convince myself to get out of bed. I rub my eyes, force myself up, and trudge to the bathroom to shower.

In attempt to escape the grogginess, I turn on some chill indie music. I wash my frizzy brown hair and my toned body very slowly, yet making sure not to miss any places.

As I finish, I step out of the hot shower, and wipe the steam off of the golden framed oval mirror above the sink, so I can see my reflection. I notice my eyes are somewhat puffy, and the scruff on my face is beginning to turn into a beard. Hm, still not too shabby looking though.

I quickly comb my hair and brush my teeth before I get dressed. Looking through my closet, I pick out a sleek black suit and put it on. I don't have much of a choice when it comes to work attire. My job is so professional, anything less than dressy is unacceptable.

When I'm finally all ready to go, I walk down to the kitchen and grab a granola bar so I won't starve. My French Bulldog, Chester, then comes to greet me. I give him a quick pat on the head, and leave the house to hop into my black Mercedes Benz and head to work.

As I arrive, I glance up at the bold letters on the blue sign in front of the massive building. The sign reads: CDC - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are thousands of jobs here at the CDC, but I'm the guy who travels all around the world to collect information on local infectious diseases.

I take a deep breath, open the door of my car, and walk to the monstrous glass building with my trusty briefcase in hand.

When I open the main doors, the first person to speak to me is Amy, the secretary. "Good Morning Mr. Rogers!" I then politely respond with a smile, and carry along to the elevator.

When I step in, it's completely empty. I press the button for the twelfth floor, and watch the steel doors inch their way closed. The treacherous sounds of elevator music rang in my ears, only making the ride seem twice as long.

When the elevator opens on my floor, I make my way to my office. I place my hand on the knob of the door, when I hear, "Mr. Rogers, may I have a word?"

I look up and see it's my boss, Mr. Sanders. He was standing not too far away, blatantly watching me go about my business.
"Of course, Mr. Sanders! Let me put down my things and I'll be right there." He nods his head and returns to his office.

After putting down my briefcase, I knock on his office door, and walk into the room when he acknowledges my presence. "Mr. Rogers, as you know, it's been a while since you've gone on one of your research trips... Well, I have one for you if you're up for it." I give him a satisfied look. "Yes Sir! I'm up for anything." He smiles and responds happily. "Good, because you kind of didn't have a choice anyway." He chuckles lightly then continues.

"I'm assigning you to the beautiful country of Denmark for two weeks and find some information on whatever disease is present in the area. I want statistics, demographics, and a thorough report on any fluctuations you record. Your flight leaves tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m."

My eyes instantly grow wide and I worriedly look at him.

"But Sir, that's so soon! Why wasn't I notified of this earlier?!" He looks up at me and tries to reassure me. "Mr. Rogers, it was a very last minute job, and you're the man I need for it. You'll be fine I promise. You're the best I've got! Everything is already paid for. All you need to do is pack your bags and go."

"Alright. I'll go. You can count on me. Thank you for the opportunity, Mr. Sanders." I nod at him and exit his office.

•••

The rest of the day went by at the blink of an eye. Next thing I know, it's 6:00 p.m. Time to go home and start packing for my trip.

I lock up my office, and head back down the elevator. I hurriedly drive home, desperate to get everything done and climb in my warm queen sized bed to sleep.

When I arrive home, I feed Chester, kiss him goodnight, and run upstairs in excitement to pack my suitcase.

As I prepare my clothes, the only thing I'm able to think about is sleep. Office work is so boring, it takes a lot out of you, even though you just sit around all day. It takes hours to pack my bags due to the fact that I can barely keep my eyes open.

But after hours of agony, its 12 a.m. when I finally finish. Phew.

I then zip up my suitcase, place it on the floor, hope into my queen sized bed, and fall into a deep sleep.

I can't wait for Denmark.
