Leighton's POV

Waking up to the sound of vehicles passing and honking is never a good thing. Waking up on the wrong side of the bed isn't either. Waking up because your mom is yelling at you at the top of her lungs, is even worse.

Not wanting to make my mom even more angry than she already was, I finally get out of bed.

I quickly grab a towel and groggily walk into my en suite to take a fast shower.

Washing my body and my hair didn't take long, but I decided I wanted to sing to make the process more interesting.

Now we're sleeping near the edge
Holding something we don't need
Oh, this delusion in our heads
Is gonna bring us to our knees

So come on, let it go
Just let it be
Why don't you be you?
And I'll be me?

Everything that's broke
Leave it to the breeze
Why don't you be you?
And I'll be me?
And I'll be me

After countless minutes of my wonderful singing, Mom comes banging on my door. "Leighton! Hurry up! You need to be ready in ten minutes. I'm gonna drop you off at the cafe, then head to work. I have to be there at 9:30! Come on, Leighton!!" she said, clearly frustrated.

I jumped out of the shower and sprinted into my room, like it was pizza night in the Gray household.

I quickly put on a grey v-neck, dark blue skinny jeans, a beanie, and my worn-out grey Vans, which really needed to be replaced soon.

Running back into the bathroom, I brush my teeth, comb my hair, blow-dry it, and put on deodorant. Moving to my dresser, I spray my American Eagle cologne on, before grabbing my guitar and my cell phone, making a beeline down the stairs, and out the door to my mom's car.

After a few short seconds, Mom spoke up, "What took you so long, honey? I was about to leave you. Gosh, I'm going to be so late!"

"I know this sounds SO stereotypical, but I'm a teenager, also gay, so it takes a little longer to do my hair. Don't hate. I have high expectations for myself." I spoke, feeling oddly confident.

Mom stayed quiet the rest of the way to the Rose Cafe, which is where I work. Once completely stopped, I lean over, kiss my mother's cheek and whisper, "I love you, Mama. Have a good day. Don't stress yourself out too much." She smiled back.

I walk into the cafe and it was extremely quiet, besides the fact that Cash, the chef, was singing Michael Jackson and cooking breakfast.

"Good Morning, Cash!" I say quite cheerily.

"Mornin', Ley. Come back and give me a hand, would ya? No one is working right now, and I need a little help if you don't mind."

I walk back, only to be surprised by the whole cafe crew, holding everything from balloons, cards, noise makers, etc. "Happy Birthday Leighton!!" Everyone yelled.

"Oh my goodness! How did I forget my own birthday?" It was June 3rd... I was born 20 years ago on this day. And I completely forgot about it. Wonder how that happened...

I turn around, and find my mom holding a birthday card and an envelope, while looking like she wanted to burst into tears.

She sniffled, "My little baby is growing up. Here are your birthday presents. It's not much. I just figured, since it's your 20th birthday, you might as well have fun."

She hands me the gifts. I take a look at the card, and it has a cute monkey on it that says, "You may drive me bananas, but it's not worth the split. Happy Birthday!"

I put the card down, then I start opening the envelope. Once I have it all the way open, my eyes grew wider than the Amazon River, staring at what I didn't think could possibly be true.

"OH MY GOSH MOM! You got me a trip to Denmark?! How much was this? I have to pay you back. Mom, why?" I spoke, looking at my mom with tears in my eyes. I blink, trying with all my might not to let them fall.

Denmark has always been a country that I've wanted to travel. It's definitely not a typical place for tourists, but it's so beautiful, and Mom knows how crazy this makes me.

Mom grins at me and says, "I thought we could both use a break. The flight is tomorrow at 12:45 p.m. We will leave the house around 12:25. You need to start packing when we get home. Okay?" She explained every intricate detail, but I was too excited to pay any attention.

The rest of the day went slow. Not many people came in the cafe, so I wasn't that busy. I was itching for the day to hurry up and end.

My mom came to pick me up, seeming exhausted, while I was still bouncing in my seat about the Denmark trip.

Once I get home, I get ready for bed, tell my mom goodnight, and let the darkness take control of me after a full hour of blankly staring at the ceiling.

I woke up at 8:45 a.m, and began packing. I pack clothes, toiletries, shoes, hair products, and electronics. When I was through with everything, I sat and watched tv, while praying I didn't forget to pack anything.

In the next couple hours, it will be time to leave for the airport, but first I have to wait for what seems like forever.

I can't wait any longer.
