"Alana! Quit dilly dallying and get down here this instance girl!" My aunt Karen shouted from downstairs. She'll lose her voice if she goes on like that. I suppose I'm sort of lucky to have her and uncle Lee, it could be worse. Still, it's not the same as when my mum and dad were alive.
~Flashback~
Last December, they were flying back home from a business trip, just before the Christmas holidays. I had been staying with my best friend, Nellie, and her parents. The news came just as Nellie and I sat down to watch some YouTube (She's so obsessed with these guys called Dan and Phil. I don't hate them, but my favorite is Tyler Oakley). Nellie's mum came into the room and asked if she could speak to me privately. She took me into the hall and I noticed the tears running down her face. It felt wrong to see her cry, she was like a second mum to me. In a small voice, she said, "Alana, darling, the plane crashed. I'm afraid you're parents won't be coming home anytime soon. I felt shocked, and confused more than sad. "Do you know where... Where they are?" I asked. She answered, "You're parents are at the Royal London Hospital."
"So they're alive!?"
"Yes, but only just. I'm supposed to take you down there now."
After telling Nellie, I got in the car with her mum and we drove to the hospital. As we walked in, the receptionist lady asked where we going. We told her, and she pointed us to the 3rd level and found the room number. In the lift, I was so nervous. What if they didn't recognize me. What if I didn't recognize them? Thoughts ran through my mind as we stepped into the hall. "Are you okay?" Nellie's mum asked, jolting me out of my thoughts. "What? Oh. Yeah. I'm okay, I guess." The room number was 303, and as we walked down the hall, I couldn't wait to see them, but dreading it all the same. And then there it was. Room 303.
I reached out to turn the handle but couldn't bring myself to and dropped my hand, stepped aside, and let Nellie's mum open it. And then it all became real. There they were, my parents, my dad lying with his eyes closed, not peacefully, but almost writhing. My mum was lying down too, but her eyes were open, and a nurse was feeding her ice. Then I lost it. I couldn't speak, and my throat closed, and tears fell violently down my face without making a sound. My mum couldn't turn her head, but said in the feeblest voice "Is that you Alana? Is that my baby?" Half asking me, and half asking the nurse.
I couldn't speak, so I looked at the nurse with a slight nod."Yes, miss, This is your daughter."
"Come here sweetheart" I walked slowly toward her, and bent down to hug her. It was so strange to see her that way, usually she was loud and happy. Looking into my eyes she said, " I love you so much, you know that?" I nodded. "I'm so sorry. I didn't want it like this."
That was the last time I saw her. About a week later, I had been staying with my nan in Manchester. I had gotten school off for a month. When the call came, my granddad answered. I could tell immediately what had happened by his face. I'd never seen either of my grandparents cry, and it scared me. My nan just hugged me, both of us crying. I couldn't believe that both my parents were dead.
After the funeral, there was the issue of where I was going to live. My grandparents lived to far away for me to go to the same school. I wanted to live with Nellie and her family, but the authorities said they wanted me to live with family. The only other option was my Dad's sister, my aunt, and my uncle. I didn't want to. I never liked them, we didn't go to their house for any holidays, and my mum had never got along with them, so my dad cut ties with his sister and her family.
But I had to, so I packed up my favorite things; about 20 of my favorite books, a collection of sketchbooks, a small box of art supplies, my ukelele, and my electronics (computer, phone, and mini speaker). So off I went to my Aunt karen's house. Luckily she lived close to Nellie and my school, so I could see Nellie regularly. I soon found out that would not be the case.
~End Flashback~
A/N I hope whoever is reading this likes it, this is my first real story, so I hope it's okay! I'll try to update regularly, but no promises :)
