That night, after skyping Nellie (she freaked out when I told her about Dan and Phil), I lay awake thinking about today. It felt so surreal to think that, just 5 hours ago I was talking to Dan and Phil. In person, as normal people. I didn't see them the same way anymore. Instead of thinking of them like famous YouTube stars my friends obsessed over, they were just a couple I had a nice conversation with at visiting day. I'm sure it was late by the time I actually fell asleep, I was so jittery.
The next day and the few days following were normal. Sunday we got to do whatever (within reason), and I went grocery shopping with Emma, Alison, and Grace, a few other girls, and one of the assistant chefs, Jacob. Jacob was only 17, a tall, lanky boy with messy dark hair. During the week, I went to school, did my chores, and wrote a parody with Violet. She really enjoyed writing them, so I would do it with her.
One Friday, while I was doing some homework and on the phone with Nellie, there was a knock at the room door. Marie opened it, and it was the assistant manger; Ms. Evalyn. "Alana? Would you please come with me?" I couldn't read her expression. "Um, Okay, just a second." I said goodbye to Nellie, put on my shoes, and walked out the door with Ms. Evalyn. "Am I in trouble?" I asked as we made our way downstairs. "No, nothing like that, I just have something to tell you. Step into my office please." I walked in, and she closed the door behind us. "All the way back," she said, gesturing to the short hallway, "and on the right."
As I walked into the room, there was a desk (Ms. Evalyn's presumably), and four chairs sitting in front of it. Two of the chairs were already occupied when I stepped through the doorway. "Have a seat, Alana," she told me cheerfully, "You remember Mr. Lester and Mr. Howell from last week?" I nodded as I sat down. "Hello Alana!" Phil and Dan greeted me, and I said "Hello", wondering what would happen next. I didn't have to wait long, as the next thing Ms.Evalyn said was, "They taken an interest with you, and would like to take you out for the day tomorrow." "Yeah," said Dan, "Just get to know you better, maybe go for lunch or something." "Would you like that Alana?" inquired Ms. Evalyn. "Yes please!" I said, "that would be loads of fun!" "Well then it's settled. They will be back tomorrow to pick you up at 11:00. So for now, you," she pointed at me,"can go back to your room while sort some things out with you." She gestured at Dan and Phil. "Alright. Goodbye! See you tomorrow!" I called as I walked ot the door. Phil turned and waved, and Dan said, "See you!"
I ran up the stairs as fast as I could, burst into my room, and said, very loudly, "I have the most amazing news! I want to tell of you at once though, so I'll be right back." Then I ran next door, knocked, and said "Meet us next door, pronto!" I ran back into my room, all the girls pestering me with questions, but I told them to wait until I had Nellie on Skype. I wanted to see all of their faces at the same time. By the time she did answer, All the girls from next door were here, all perched on various pieces of furniture. Sara at the desk chair, Raina and Marie on the desk, Alison was leaning against the dresser Grace was sat on, Emma was on the floor, and Violet, Tanya, and Eden were sat on my bed with me, as I caught Nellie up.
"So what's the big news?" Alison asked. "Yeah, why'd you drag us here, what's going on?" Grace chimed in. Soon they were all yelling questions at me, even Nellie. "Silence!" I yelled. "Hush children, for I have great news. I have been asked on a day out with a couple tomorrow-" Sara cut me off; "So? That happens to all of us once in a while." "Ah, but you didn't let me finish. The couple is-I shit you not about this- Dan and Phil!" and then they all started screaming at me again, a mixture of "OMG"s and "Take me with you!", and "Not faiiiir!". This time I let them go at it, and we screamed excitedly for a while, and then Nellie said she had to go, she had a big essay due. Then the girls from next door left, and Violet went downstairs to find a snack (I swear, she was always hungry!). We talked for a while, and Violet came back with a box of shreddies, which we munched on while we did homework and watched YouTube videos.
I decided to go to sleep early that night so the morning would come sooner, and I would wake up with actual time to get ready. In the morning, when I did wake up, only Violet was awake, quietly reading in bed. I lay there for a while, remembering yesterday. Then I went to take shower, walked down the hall and into the bathroom, locked my self in the shower, turned the water on, and closed my eyes. The water was cold at first, but got warmer. I washed my hair and my body, using up the last of my cherry blossom shower gel. I turned the water off, dried my self, wrapped my hair in a towel and put on my dressing gown and walked back to my room. By the time I got there, everyone was awake, and I got dressed, then stood by the dresser and blow dried and straightened my hair (we're technically not allowed to, but we all do).
Then we all went to breakfast, and I had two pieces of toast with eggs, instead of one. Then we just killed time for a few hours, fiddling around, singing and dancing along with the radio, cleaning up the mess of dry cereal everywhere that Tanya made. Then we sat around, all of us impatient and excited. I kept checking the clock, and at last it was 10:30. I brushed my hair again, and the girls had all helped me pick out the perfect outfit, light wash skinny jeans with my dark blue 'Muggle' T-shirt and my galaxy converse. Top it off with my black fedora and a grey jacket, and I was ready to go when 11:00 rolled around.
When Ms. Evalyn knocked on the door, I was standing there, waiting impatiently. I opened it, and she asked me, "Ready to go?" "Yes!" I answered "But is it okay if my friends walk me downstairs?" She nodded, and started down the hall. We all squealed in excitement, and everyone threw their shoes on, and we ran to catch up. Down the stairs, and into the main hall, where Dan and Phil were stood waiting by the door in Ms. Evalyn's office.
"Hello! These are my friends, Eden, Marie, Tanya, Violet, Sara, Alison, Grace, Emma, and Raina." I introduced them, each one waving in turn. "Oh hi!" said Phil, "I'm Phil, and this is Dan." We all chatted for a bit, and then Dan said, "Well, you've all been lovely, but I think we should go if want to get anywhere." "Oh, yeah. Bye guys, I'll see you in a few hours." I told them. They all said goodbye, and waved as they walked back upstairs. "Have fun!" Called Ms. Evalyn out the door as we left.
"So, what do you want to do?" Dan asked me. "I'm not sure. What do you think?" "How about go for lunch and we'll see from there?" offered Phil. "Okay" "Where do you want to go?" that was Dan "I don't really care, wherever." "Dan and I know this really good Italian place not far from here, so we can walk." And so we did. As we walked, I asked them about themselves. I already knew some, through Nellie and general internet knowledge, but there were some things that they told me that I didn't know, like that Dan has a younger brother. They told me about being YouTubers, and I didn't want to lie to them, so I said; " Yeah, I watch way to much YouTube, but I've never really watched any of your videos, just heard of them in passing. What's up with the 'Don't cry, craft' thing that happened?" (I didn't really lie, just under-exaggerated, plus if it had been my choice I would have never seen them, it was all Nellie's fault.) "Oh, it's just that for April fools last year we made a video on our fake new channel, and the slogan was 'Don't cry, craft'." "Oh, okay." I said, and by that time we were there.
As we sat down, Dan asked where I learned to play the ukelele. "Well, the year my parents died they let me open one present before they left, and it was my ukelele and a certificate for a year of lessons. I never got the lessons, because I had to go live at my aunt's, but I made a promise to myself to learn anyway, so I guess I taught myself through a combination of YouTube tutorials and just practice." "That's really cool of you," said Phil, "Our friend PJ plays the ukelele sometimes." "PJ like that guy; Kickthepj?" "Yeah" Dan answered. I fiddled with my spaghetti during the silence, and Phil sneezed. "Bless you" said Dan. Out of habit of telling people random factoids, I said, "Did you know that when you sneeze, your heart skips a beat, and that's why you say 'God bless you'." "I did not know that" said Dan.
After lunch, we walked around and just talked some more, and by the time we had to go back I felt like I'd told them almost everything I could tell someone. When we got back, My friends were waiting in the main room. Ms. Evalyn came to greet us. "How did it go?" I waited for them to answer. "It went great!" said Dan. "Yeah, we had fun, right Alana?" asked Phil. I nodded vigorously. "Well, run along Alana, I have some business to attend to with Mr. Howell and Mr. Lester." "Okay, bye guys!" " Bye Alana!"said Dan, and Phil chimed in with "goodbye!"
"So how did it go?" asked Raina as we headed upstairs.
