Well, here I was, sitting in a room with 4 other girls, a box filled with my belongings and my ukelele under my bed. I was finally rid of my aunt and uncle. That period of my life was over, and even though life here wasn't ideal, anywhere was better than that place. The last few weeks had been filled with shouting, fights, slaps, paperwork, begging, and memories I never want to think about again. The Home (Emerson Brooks), was a large building, but cosy, and the staff was kindly and helpful, though strict. It had a school that all the girls went to, so I had to transfer from my old one, but it was worth it. Nellie lived about half an hour away, but we had worked it out so she would come every other week, and we skyped and texted regularly.
The food was fine, not horrible, not amazing, and we all had chores. Since I was 13, I got to help with breakfast, and I could watch the little girls sometimes. Couples came about once a week, looking to adopt a girl or foster one. No one wanted an older girl though, everyone wanted a baby, and there I stayed for almost a year. Sometimes I would be disappointed, but everyone always told us they needed us older girls to help with upkeep. I didn't mind, compared to my chores at Aunt Karen's house this was nothing.
One day in late March, after a shower and walking to my room in my dressing gown (never did get used to that), I opened my room door to find it empty, all the girls were downstairs. As I dried my waist length ebony hair, I wondered where they were, and Eden burst in. She was one of my best friend here, and I loved her personality and the fact she was openly gay. "Alana! What the shizzles are you doing?! Visiting starts in like 20 minutes!" "Omigod! I totally forgot! I'll be right there!" I pushed her out the door and grabbed some clothes out of my box. I wasn't allowed to take much because the orphanage provided uniforms, but on the weekends we were allowed free dress. Panicking, I grabbed some black skinny jeans, socks (mismatching, but who cares), a light blue t-shirt with a cat on it, and my favorite hoodie (It's dark grey with a light grey hood and little horns on top. Nellie was showing me a Danisnotonfire video a while ago and he was wearing that hoodie. I just had to get it, it looked so comfy and cute!). Quickly pulling my hair into a side braid, I grabbed my ukelele so I could entertain my friends.
I ran down the four flights of stairs, two at a time, almost tripping multiple times. Finally I made it to the main room, where Miss Judy, one of the nurses, pointed me to a line. I slipped in behind Eden and in front of Marie, a small girl with short blonde curls who was extremely weird but got weirded out super easy (?). "You know the only reason I come here is because I get to see Nellie right?" I asked the my group (we were all friends, either from my room or the one next to it. "Same thoooo" said a familiar voice. It was Sara (with no H 'cause H's are ew, as she had introduced herself to me), a asian girl with curly hair from the room next door, obsessed with Youtube (like all of us except Marie)and K-pop. Our conversations were mostly sarcastic. "Shut up Sara!" That was Grace and Alison at the same time, very different girls that were inseparable. Both had been there their whole lives. Grace was tall and skinny, blonde, and heavily into gymnastics. Alisonwas kind of average (in the best way possible), average height, weight, and hair color (brown). She loved Anime and cats, the latter something I also liked, and the former something I never understood. "BOO!" Violet and Tanya had crept up behind me, "You know I knew you were there, right?" I asked them as Emma giggled and Raina rolled her eyes.
Violet was a short, skinny girl, with stick straight brown hair and eyes to match her name. She loved anything and all things random. Tanya was short as well, but not so skinny, and kind liked everything. She never had one thing she was in love with. YouTube, swimming, gymnastics, cats, reading, music, she liked everything each of us liked, so she was the best when we all hung out together. Emma was tall, with straight dark blonde hair and a shy personality, always following the rules. Raina was short and skinny with wavy chestnut hair and always gossiping, but not in a bad way.
The way our visiting days worked was this; first we all lined up and the couples sat down while the headmistress explained how this would work. Then we went into the giant lounge and got to sit wherever we wanted, as long as we sat with our age group. The maybe-parents-to-be walked around and introduced themselves to any girls they were interested in. Usually not many people talked to us, but sometimes a couple would strike up a conversation with a girl, and then take her out for a day. mostly the would just ask how we were, small talk and that sort of thing, just to be polite. After that, people who were coming to visit specific people ( grandparents, friends, Nellie) came to talk with us).
We would spend the whole time chatting or coming up with silly impromptu songs accompanied by my uke. After about an hour, when most of the couples left, the headmistress would make an announcement saying that if we wanted, we could go up to our rooms. "You wanna leave?" asked Marie. "I don't know about you, but-" I cut Violet off, "I'm feeling 22!" I sang, strumming along. "Shut up you spork!" Eden whacked me on the head with her sketchbook. I pouted at her, but Violet picked up where she left off, "I'm going upstairs." There were several nods of agreement, but I shook my head; "I'll stay here to wait for Nellie." "I guess I'll wait with you" said Alison. "I'll stay too" said Tanya. "Okay, well by guys, see you later" Sara called over her shoulder as the others waved. Tanya and Alison waved back, but I just nodded, still strumming.
Nellie came with her dad after about 15 minutes of waiting. We could only talk for about 10 minutes, but we promised to FaceTime the next day. She told me more of the latest YouTube gossip. Apparently Dan and Phil actually were a couple, as they had announced it last month. Of course I already knew this, but Nellie needs to tell everyone all Phan news. Just as we were getting up to go, the Headmistress made another announcement:"Would girls who are still here stay? We have some couples running late because of a traffic accident" So we sat back down. As if on cue, the I could hear the heavy doors opening, and a group of people walked in. We kept talking and I made up a little sad/happy song about how we'll never leave this place. Soon Tanya left, and not long after, so did Alison. I stayed, just strumming and singing to myself, a song I had recently learned, 7 years by Lukas Graham. The doors opened again, and two young men walked in. They looked familiar, but their backs were to me, so I didn't know where from.
I went back to my playing, every once in a while looking up to see couples had moved around. For some reason, those two men kept catching my eye, but I wasn't sure why. Suddenly, they turned around to speak to another girl closer to me, and I saw their faces and heard their voices. "Hello, what's your name?" one asked the girl, I knew her, she was nine and her name was Anya. The other said "You look very pretty today Anya, my name is Phil." I did a double take. Sure enough, it was them. Standing about 5 meters from me were Daniel James Howell and Phillip Michael Lester.
