"Behind my smile is a broken heart,
Behind my laugh, I'm falling apart.
Look closely at me and you will see,
The girl I am, isn't me."
~~~IN the morning, the sun's feeble light trickled through the open window that Cassandra had left open during the night as she unpacked her boxes.
She murmured a cuss word then flung the soft warm floral bed sheet off her body, feeling the cold slithering up her legs and arms. In half an hour, she was dressed and ready for school.
Cassie wore a black jumper that fell off her shoulder and light blue jeans that hugged her timid waist and flashed a little bit of her stomach, showing her pieced belly button. She had black booties with laces on which made her taller and slimmer than normal, a cream shoulder bag filled with all her school essentials and a diamond ring that fitted on her finger.
Her hair was let down, her chocolate locks bouncing on her shoulder as she paced around the room, nervousness filling up her body.
What if- No. No more what if. She was done with what ifs and done second guessing everything. It wasn't great that she came back at the beginning of senior year. She just wanted to study and graduate then enjoy the rest of her summer before college. Cassie was determined to head back to school and stay out then limelight.
Yeah, like that was going to happen, she thought.
Tears swelled up in her eyes as she remembered the horrendous memories but she blinked them away rapidly, careful not to make her eyeliner and mascara run. Her hazel eyes glistened in the sunlight as she slipped on her Ray Bans that her dad got her on her 17th birthday.
"Cassandra, are you not coming to eat? Michael is going to leave in a minute." Her foster dad's voice boomed from downstairs.
"Coming!" She shouted back and quickly shook away the memories and stalked downstairs.
"Are you sure you want to head back?" He asked, worry lacing in his voice.
Cassie nodded and sipped on her coffee. "I'll be fine, George. I'm going to go now." She dropped the mug in the sink and walks over to him, bending down to give him a kiss on the cheek.
He was still worried for her but didn't say anything because he was proud that she was going to try. He gave her a weak smile as she exited the house and towards the Bentley that was waiting for her. He was proud. Her mother would be proud, if she was a better person. George sighed, if only she knew that her mother is waiting for her. Waiting for her to meet up.
Cassie got to school, the Bentley parking up in front of the school stairs. She suddenly felt very nostalgic as she looked over the ancient school through the tinted windows. Everything was the same, same people leaning and gossiping around their cars, same car park spaces, same everything. Everything was the same but her. That's what made her stand out.
