Chapter 23
(Ladies shall fence)
Callista felt uneasy as she walked out of her room and entered the hallway. Her guards noticed it immediately.
“Are you alright?” Cavin asked openly showing concern.
“Embry will be here today. I haven’t seen him since… you know,” Callista replied.
“You aren’t to blame for what happened,” Braiden assured her.
“Thanks, but he might not see it that way. Then there’s the fact I have to fence today and I think we would all agree Nadine hates me. I hope I lose before I face her. I think the woman would actually try and kill me. Then there’s always that jerk Frazzier.”
“Death is not allowed in competition,” Cavin assured her. “Embry will not blame you and yes Frazzier as you said is a jerk.” Callista giggled at his words. She didn’t know why but the way he’d spoken made her feel better.
“Here,” Greer said and handed her a chocolate muffin.
“You guys really are the greatest,” Callista said holding back tears. “Don’t ever leave me.”
“Not a chance,” Will assured her. “We belong to you.”
“I really am the luckiest girl alive to have you four,” She replied. “Let’s go.” She turned and started down the hall. She had said she was lucky to have them but the guards felt the same way about her.
“You really are a muffin girl aren’t you?” Amara said as Callista approached the field.
“Muffin girl?” Lady Marissa asked.
“Every time I see her she has a muffin,” The Dragon Princess informed the red haired woman.
“I love muffins!” Callista said sounding like a little kid. The other two women couldn’t help but laugh.
“So you ready to show us what you have?” Lady Marissa asked.
“I just learned to fence recently,” Callista replied. “Daggers I’ve thrown for a few years. My goal today is to not get killed by Nadine.” Marissa giggled and Amara smirked. “Well it’s true! I have no desire to be a pin cushion!” Both girls openly laughed at that.
“Speaking of,” The Dragon Princess announced. The other two ladies glanced the direction of Amara’s gaze and saw Lady Nadine walking towards the field in garments of gold and nickel. She even wore a cape.
“Modesty is not one of her virtues is it?” Callista said before she could stop herself.
“Are you kidding? I thought she’d topple out of her gown last night,” Lady Marissa replied. Callista let out a giggle and looked at Amara who was trying to fight back her amusement.
“So how many newbies are there?” The Dark Elf Princess asked a moment later.
“Newbies? What’s a newbie?” Amara asked completely unaware of the term.
“Newbies. Someone who is new at something,” Callista explained. “How many others are competing for the first time?”
“Oh! It’s the first competition for Lady Nella, Princess Ophelia, and Baroness Dionna,” Amara informed her. “So four of you.”
“Well maybe I’ll get lucky and win one by default,” Callista said hopeful. The two other women looked at her and she got the feeling they were not amused. “Lighten up. I’ll try to win. I simply understand that I will not win and will lose to someone.”
