Chapter 27
(Arrows will fly)
A soft breeze was blowing as Callista made her way toward the tournament field once again. Her guards held her bow and arrows for her while she munched on a muffin and drank yet another coke. The younggirl quickly found where Amara and Marissa were and went to where they stood.
“Are you okay?” Callista asked seeing a very nervous Marissa.
“Sure. Fine.”
“You don’t sound fine,” The blonde haired woman commented.
“You two are already champions. What if I do really bad?” She said and covered her mouth. She had obviously not meant to voice her thoughts.
“Well if you suck at this join the club,” Callista quipped. “I’m an elf and who knows what the hell is going to happen with my arrow.” Marissa giggled before she could stop herself. Smiling at the red haired woman, she said, “Hold out your hand.” Marissa wasn’t sure but did as she was told.
‘Cavin would you please put a coke in her hand?’ Callista thought. Instantly a coke appeared in the woman’s hand. ‘Thanks.’
‘My pleasure,’ He replied.
“What is…”
“Drink it,” Callista told her. “It will help settle your stomach. You look like you are possibly going to hurl.” Marissa glared at the girl teasingly but began drinking the coke.
“Here comes trouble,” Amara commented. Her two companions looked over to see both Lady Jane and Lady Colene approaching.
“Damn it!” Marissa complained.
“All I’m saying is we all know I won’t be winning this one. Kind of embarrassing too,” Callista commented. “Did you remember your helmets?” Amara swatted her. “I’m not kidding!”
It was only a few minutes and the arrow shooting contest began. Callista watched as person after person went before her. She clapped happily when both Marissa and Amara hit their targets and went to the winner side.
“Princess Callista and Lady Helena,” A voice called.
Callista groaned. She took her bow and arrow pouch and headed onto the field. She looked right at her father and the Dragon King and said, “Are you sure you want me to attempt this?” The Dragon King looked amused but Soren narrowed his eyes at her. “Alright. If you have a helmet put it on,” She called out. The princess knew she heard a few snickers. Shaking her head she turned around and faced the target. “Here goes nothing.”
Callista pulled the arrow back and released it. At first it looked fine but then it suddenly ricocheted off the target. Hearing a few screams she didn’t need to turn around to know her arrow had gone back towards the stands. It didn’t stop as it hit a piece of metal and went soaring over by the winner’s side only to bounce off something else before finally stopping.
“Sorry!” She apologized to the crowd.
“How the hell did you do that?!” a man in the stands shouted. “You’re a dark elf –shooting an arrow should be instinct!”
“Yeah well apparently no one told my elf half that!” Callista retorted. “I didn’t kill anyone did I?” She asked a moment later and hesitantly looked around the stands.
“No but more amazing is you actually hit the target,” Lady Marissa commented.
“I did?” Callista turned around to look at her target. Her arrow was in the dead center of the target. “I hit it!” She said happily. “Damn it that means I have to shoot again!”
