Chapter 46

(Face the facts)

It was early as Vardan looked out the window watching his sister shooting baskets. A sense of concern flowed over him that showed no sign of leaving. He knew his little sister was brave. She had faced dangers both here and in the mortal world. The time of him despising her had left. Now he could only feel concern, sympathy, and even pride in Callista. So much had been thrown at her already and now it seemed even more would come her way.

Silently he stood wondering what if anything he could do to help her. He knew she was in danger simply for being his sister; a Dark Elf Princess. If Shalace had truly chosen her as its queen though than she would be in even more danger.

“This isn’t fair,” Owen said coming up to stand next to him. “Callista isn’t getting a chance to get used to anything before we throw more at her.”

“She’s strong,” Vardan told his other brother. “We’re lucky to have been given such a…amazing sister.”

Owen looked over at his half brother and couldn’t stop a small smile from gracing his face. It amazed him that against every one of Vardan’s instincts that he now openly praised their sister. Vardan had been bent on hating the girl. Owen was glad for the change. “She may need us.”

Vardan looked over at the blonde fae. Owen hadn’t verbally asked a question but Vardan knew his brother’s intent. “Then it would be wise to be ready to help her.”

“If she’ll let us.” Both princes’ turned to see their sister’s guard named Will. “Your sister can be very stubborn.”

“It’s kept her alive so far,” Vardan commented. “Not to mention how much respect she’s gained.”

“No!!!” the three men looked over to see the princess glaring up at the sky as a sudden rain shower began. They watched grudgingly pick up her ball and head toward a castle entrance off to the side.

“She does not like it when her basketball time is interrupted,” Owen commented.

“No she doesn’t,” Will agreed.

Aiden brought a glass of wine to his lips as a roll of thunder lightly rolled through the air. A sigh escaped him as he looked out at the now falling rain. The Goblin King had been sure his life had a new focus and things would finally be very positive in his kingdom but now he wasn’t so sure.

He was still engaged to Callista but if Shalace had chosen her for its Queen, as they suspected, then his happy ending might not happen. There was no telling who Shalace would choose for its king. It was possible Shalace would accept him but it was also possible it wouldn’t.

“Sire do…are you alright?” Chale asked as he entered the room. When the king didn’t immediately answer the captain closed the door and approached him. “Has something happened?”

“No. Not yet at least.”

“My king?”

“Shalace has chosen her Chale; I’m sure of it,” Aiden told him looking at the wine glass he held almost sadly. “I may lose her.”

“You don’t know that sire. Besides once you are married…”

“Chale if she is Queen and I am not King then she will not be mine.” The dark haired man looked to his captain. “Even if I were to marry her and be her husband she would not solely belong to me. I don’t think I can share her with someone else,” he said taking the glass to his lips once more.
