Chapter 37
(She’s Special)
It was late as Callista woke up from what she had meant to be a short nap. Rubbing her eyes she slipped out of bed. Hearing her stomach growl she decided she would head for the kitchen and get something to eat. The young woman walked over to the dresser and picking up a hair clip twirled her hair and pinned it to her head. She stretched again and headed for the door.
“Your highness,” Cavin said pleased to see her. Before she could speak her stomach let out a rather loud growl causing the girl to blush. “It seems a trip to the kitchens is in order.”
Callista nodded. “I didn’t mean to sleep so long.”
“Everyone understood,” Braiden assured her.
“King Aidan wasn’t surprised at all,” Cavin informed her. “He commented that he slept quite a while after facing the Labyrinth himself.” Callista simply nodded and they began to walk through the halls toward the kitchens.
The halls were quite but every now and then they would pass a servant or guard who would immediately stop what they were doing and give her at the least a respectful nod. In turn the girl smiled warmly at them and returned their acknowledgement.
The princess didn’t expect to find any servants in the kitchen, least of all several.
“Your highness!” A woman said openly shocked to see her. Instantly everyone else in the kitchens turned their attention to the dark elf princess.
“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to disturb you,” Callista apologized feeling a little guilty at interrupting so many servants at work.
“Nonsense,” The woman said. “I am Matilda. What can I ...” Hearing the girl’s stomach growl she stopped. With a large smile on her face she said, “Why don’t you head into the dining room and I will prepare you a meal immediately.”
“Oh no. I can get something myself. Please...”
“Nonsense I insist!” Matilda said unwavering.
Normally Callista would have argued the point but something about this cook told her she wouldn’t win. “Alright but can I just sit at the small table over there?” She asked pointing to a small unused table. She watched as several mouths dropped open. “Oh were you going to use that table?”
“No but…we are simple servants,” A boy that looked to be no more than 14 said.
Callista just looked at him for a moment before what he hadn’t said dawned on her. She smiled warmly at the servants. “Everyone has a role they play whether it is cook, guard, princess, or maid. A title doesn’t truly define someone. Yes I am a princess now but I grew up just a normal girl. In this world it probably would translate to a pheasant.”
