Chapter 30

Cavin watched as Callista headed out to the field with her brother Owen and her other guards. For the first time in well over a century he felt nervous. He knew the princess wouldn’t care what a score board said, but he did. The fae guard wanted to show her that no matter what they encountered he would be there to protect her.

Seeing Frazzier approach the girl he shook his head. It seemed the curly short red haired fae man just couldn’t get it through his head that Callista was not attracted to him in any way. The guard smirked catching the princess glance at one of her guards more than a little annoyed.

“Something…Frazzier,” Tae groaned. “He just won’t give up will he?”

The young princess’ captain shrugged. “Frazzier has never had anyone immediately reject them. Her highness is different.”

“You do realize there is no one else here don’t you?” Cavin looked at her father’s captain. “You don’t have to be so formal.”

“Yes I do,” The blue eyed fae replied. “Less she gets her way and breaks me.”

“Break you?” Tae questioned. Cavin looked at him and the dark elf chuckled as he realized what he meant. “Trying to break your formality is she?”

“She’s been trying since the beginning,” He admitted. Tae chuckled. “It’s not funny. I’m beginning to fear she may one day get her way.”

“Soren and I are sometimes informal.” The blue eyed fae raised an eyebrow at him. “It’s not a common practice but…I believe you would agree that Callista is not a common princess.”

“No she’s not.” Hearing footsteps the two fell silent.

“Cavin, good. Would you mind not making a fool out of me this time?” A guard with long white hair in a low ponytail asked.

“Fool of you?” Cavin inquired. He recognized the man but could not recall his name. He did however know he had not competed against him since they were guards in training many years ago.

“I have not forgotten how badly you beat me the last time we competed.” Without elaborating the man continued on. Tae and Chale both smirked while Cavin looked baffled. A surprised look at Chale revealed the fae hadn’t heard him join them.

“You don’t remember do you?” Chale said.

“I can’t say that I do,” Cavin admitted. “Apparently he found it memorable.”

“He fell in a water trough,” Tae informed him. The dark elf laughed as it became clear Cavin still didn’t remember.

“Put a lot of people in water have you?” The Goblin Kingdom’s captain asked.

Cavin shrugged. “From time to time.”

“Then I’m glad there’s no water on the field,” Micah commented leaning on the wall. “This is my kingdom after all. Shall we?” The other captains nodded in agreement and they began making their way to the field.

Callista felt very relaxed as she walked out to the field with her brother, Owen, at her side. Today was the Captain’s Challenge. The men had competed in Archery the day before. Moryn had easily won that competition. Now all the royals could relax and watch the competing captains battle it out.

They entered the stands to see Moryn, Amara and Vardan were already there. “Yay, we aren’t competing,” She said doing a happy dance with her hands. Amara let out a giggle while someone else let out an amused snort. While no one claimed the snort a glance in Princess Ophelia’s direction revealed the dark haired princess was trying to hide a guilty smile.
