the next morning when everyone woke up, the group went off to find the kingdom of rhyme and reason.
"why is queen acumen even important?" gabe whined. jenna rolled her eyes.
"quit whining. we need her if you want to cross over to the land of expectations," jenna muttered.
"has anyone seen ariel?" marina questioned, glancing around. "he was here when we left..."
"speaking of which, where's brendon?" ryan observed. the group stopped and looked around, but there was no sign of brendon and ariel.
"um, this could be a problem," hayley mumbled.
"goddammit!" lynn exclaimed. "ariel always runs off! if it weren't for him, we'd be home by now! he always holds us back."
"love ya too, lynn," ariel muttered as he rejoined the group. he had bloodstains on his clothes and skin, which sent everyone into a panic.
"ariel! where did you even come from?" ryan exclaimed.
"why are you bleeding? are you gonna die? fuck, did-"
"it's not my blood," ariel muttered.
"well who's is it?" lynn asked impatiently.
"brendon's." the group went silent. ryan blinked back tears.
"you're kidding, right?" she questioned, feeling as though she could hardly breathe. ariel sighed.
"the guard got him. i tried to save him," ariel said, but something in his eyes said it wasn't the truth. "im sorry." ryan felt as though her heart had dropped.
"y-you can't be serious," ryan stammered. "no, no, no. brendon can't be-"
"im sorry," ariel whispered. "i really tried to save him."
-
the rest of the walk was silent. the only sound that could be heard was ryan's quiet sobs. nobody knew what to say now that brendon was dead.
