"Crystal Eaton." My name is called out, and I know it is now time for me to choose. My heart pounds in my chest and if feels like it weighs a thousand pounds.
My legs shake as I climb out my seat, and down the stairs towards to bowls. There are five bowls, lined up. Grey stones for abnegation, coal for dauntless, water for erudite, earth for amity and glass for Candor.
My eyes skim the bowls, particularly hovering over dauntless and abnegation. My two test results. I look up to see a elderly man, with brown hair and green eyes. He hands me a knife. I take it and press the blade to my left Palm and press. I press quite hard, and my hand stings as I cut it. Blood starts to gather at the surface and rise up out of the small wound.
I hold my hand over the bowl with coal in it, and let my blood drip onto it. "Dauntless!" The man says and pats me on the back as I walk over the others who chose dauntless. My parents smile down at me. I will see them in 8 weeks, after training and initiation... If I make it, that is.
I find a empty chair and sit down and look as the next person chooses. "Hey. I'm Rosie." I hear a voice coming from my left. I turn and see a blonde haired blue eyed abnegation girl. Her hair is tied back into a bun and she wears a smile. "Hey there, I'm Crystal! You're abnegation right?" I ask, puzzled. It's extremely rare that we get a abnegation transfer.
"Uh.. Yeah. I don't think my parents approve of my choice." She looks at me with sad eyes. Typical, abnegation always think of others. I roll my eyes.
"This isn't about them. It's about you." I say and smile
As soon as the choosing ceremony has finished, dauntless stand up and run. I know what we are running to, the train. We have to jump on the train... Something I have worried about for ages! I have seen people do it, not everyone makes it. But I will. I am determined to make it into dauntless. As we are running, I make Rosie stay near me in case something happens. "Be right back." I mutter to Rosie as I see a Candor boy fall over. Me and Rosie are at the front, so I run back a bit to assist the boy.
I help him up. "Thanks." He gasps and looks up. He has black hair and blue eyes. "No problem. I'm crystal, what's your name? I say and smile.
"Kaden. Nice to meet you Crystal." He says and we run to the platform, where a few are already waiting for the train. We jog up to Rosie who is standing on the platform, looking nervous, refilling her thumbs.
"Rosie, this is Kaden. Kaden this is Rosie. I can see you're both nervous." I say, introducing them to each other.
"Hello." Rosie says and nods to Kaden
"Hey." Kaden says
"Guys look! There's the train!" Someone shouts. I turn my head and yup there it is.
"Follow my lead, okay?" I say and start to jog as the train approaches. The train goes past me and I push the button on the side, foot in the foot hole and swing over, into the train. I then turn to see Rosie and Kaden running and hold my hand out to help them get in. Rosie grabs my hand and throws herself in and Kaden does the same. We al sit in the train and laugh. We made it!
"Dear god.. Are they trying to kill us!" Rosie says whilst panting and laughing. I just shake my head. "Crystal... What do we have to do next?" Kaden asks me
"I don't know, we were never told." I say and frown. I actually don't know. No one ever spoke of it, but knowing dauntless it will be something dangerous.
We sit on the train for about 20 minutes, until a loud voice comes out on the speaker. "Hello there. Thank you for choosing Dauntless. In just a few minutes, you will be jumping off this train onto the dauntless roof. Thank you." The voice then dies down and everyone is gasping. Jumping off this train? Oh my gosh.
I stand up and look out the window. I see people jumping! "Guys get ready, when this cart goes round the corner we have to jump." I say to the cart and pull the door open. Everyone stands up, and I stand back. As the train goes round the corner, I grab Rosie and Kadens hand and we jump, together.
We are suspended in mid air, until I feel my feet land onto something solid. I let go of their hands as we roll around, from the impact of the jump. When we are finally still, in a pile of limbs, we all laugh and untangle ourselves and stand up, brushing ourself off. I jog over to where everyone else is standing, and I see a man stood on a small wall... A very large drop behind him. Rosie and Kaden jog up next to me.
"Welcome to Dauntless. I am Dan. You have survived the train jump I see." He says and smirks. He has blonde hair spiked up and blue eyes, with a eyebrow piercing and several tattoos. "So who's the first?" He says. "First to what?" A Candor girl says. "Jump." He simply replies, like he does it everyday. Well. Maybe he does.
"Is there water at the bottom?" Someone else asks.
"You'll see." He says and raises his eyebrow.
"I'll go first." I say. I mean, both my parents must have done this before and they survived it, so there must be something at the bottom.
I step forward onto the ledge, and take my jacket off revealing a black tank top. I throw my jacket at Max, a old school friend who I hate. It hits him in the face and everyone laughs, including Dan. I look down at the drop, close my eyes and let my body fall.
