I lazily opened my eyes upon hearing footsteps. I gazed up at the metal door, watching it open. The usual guard walked in with a tray of food.

"Lunchtime, monster."

The bored tone in his voice made my eye twitch in irritation. The guard crouched in front of me, removing the very edge of the tape covering my mouth.

I simply stared at him blankly as he began shoveling spoonfuls of food to the corner of my mouth. I knew the drill and didn't bother putting up a fight anymore.

I opened the corner of my mouth as much as I could, feeling the metal spoon brush past my sharpened teeth. I chewed, swallowed, then repeated this dull process until I had finished off my meal.

The guard stared for a moment, his eyes fixed on the edge of my mouth, which stretched across my cheek and almost to my ear.

"Never in my life have I seen such a monstrosity. You and those other two, of course."

He pushed the tape back in place, completely covering my mouth once again. He then stood and left the room without another word, shutting the door behind him.

I listened to the fading of his footsteps as he walked down the corridor. I inwardly sighed and closed my eyes, silence falling upon my room.

I wonder how the others are doing. Probably being treated the same way I am. Chained up and restrained in a solitary confinement cell, barely able to move while our mouths are taped up.

These police sure know how to treat a lady. I used to fight back, resisting and struggling against the guards. But not being able to get a decent meal has weakened me.

My body doesn't have the strength anymore. I gave up and just complied to whatever demands were made. After all, when I am finally able to escape, I will have my revenge on these miserable humans.

How long has it been anyway? A few months? Somwhere in that range. It's hard to tell. Time has just kind of blended together while I've been trapped in here.

I don't know what month this is. I don't know the date. Or the time. I can barely even tell when it's day or night.

I opened my eyes again, glaring down at the floor as I thought back on the events that caused all of this. I remember them well, as if they had just happened yesterday.

~Flashback~

"Azalea, I don't know if I can do this."

I smiled and placed my hands on my younger sister's shoulders. "You can, Rose. We've been practicing a lot for this. We can do it. You can do it."

She returned my smile. "You're right. We've performed plenty of times before, this will be no different."

I nodded and backed away from her. "Exactly."

"Wow! That's a big crowd out there!"

We both looked over at our youngest sibling as she peeked between the curtains.

I yelled, "Violet! Stop peeking! They're going to see you!"

She yelped in surprise and quickly shut the curtains before looking at me apologetically. "Sorry, Azalea. I can't help it."

I sighed and shook my head. "Never mind. Get in your places, we're about to start."

We grabbed our microphones and stood behind the large curtains. My sisters stood on either side of me as we waited for our turn on stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, our big music competition is coming to a close! But I'm sure you won't be disappointed! Our final performance today is the Valentine Sisters!"

The room was filled with claps and cheers at the mention of our name. The announcer came behind the curtains with a smile on her face.

"You're up, girls! Break a leg!"

She rushed offstage as the large, red curtains finally began to rise. Everyone's cheers only got louder upon finally seeing us. It soon grew quiet as the music started. I glanced at Violet as she started the song.

(Violet)
"I stay out too late
Got nothing in my brain
That's what people say,
mmm-mmm
That's what people say,
mmm-mmm"

(Rose)
"I go on too many dates
But I can't make them stay
At least that's what people say,
mmm-mmm
That's what people say,
mmm-mmm"

(Azalea)
"But I keep cruising
Can't stop, won't stop moving
It's like I got this music
In my mind
Saying, 'It's gonna be alright'"

(All)
"Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake off

Heart-breakers gonna break, break, break, break, break
And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake if off, I shake it off"

People were cheering our names and moving to the beat as we sang. This was my absolute favorite thing to do, sing alongside my sisters.

"I, I, I shake it off, I shake it off
I, I, I shake it off, I shake it off"

As soon as the song had ended, the whole room erupted in applause. The three of us bowed before leaving the stage.

Violet excitedly jumped up and down in front of us. "We did soooo good! They all loved it!"

I smiled and looked over at Rose. "You see? I told you we could do it. You were getting nervous for nothing."

She nodded. "Yeah, I should've listened to you."

I placed a hand on both of their shoulders. "Never doubt me."

They both answered in unison, "We won't."

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are ready to name our winner!"

We turned our attention to the announcer on stage. "And the winner of this year's music competition is..."

I held my breath in anticipation.

"...The Valentine Sisters!"

The three of us gasped with wide grins spreading across our faces. We went back out onto the stage as everyone cheered.

Standing next to the announcer, she handed us a gold trophy of a music note. "Congratulations, girls. You three are exceptional singers. You deserve this trophy."

Still grinning, I eagerly accepted the prize. After leaving the college behind, we headed down the street toward home with the trophy in hand.
