(This is still in the flashback)

Violet was literally bouncing with joy the whole way home. "Whooo! I still can't believe we won! That was so awesome!"

I shrugged my shoulders. "Hey, I told you guys we were gonna win. What was it I said earlier?"

Violet giggled. "Never doubt you, we know."

We soon arrived back home, quietly entering the front door. We looked around, noticing our dad in the kitchen. Luckily, he hadn't heard us come in.

I gestured to the others and we all quietly snuck upstairs to our rooms. I sighed to myself after shutting my door and placed the trophy on my desk.

I wish we didn't have to stay here, but we've got nowhere else to go. The few dorms at our college had already been taken and we don't have the money for our own place, at least not yet.

I sat in my room for awhile, catching up on some homework when I heard a scream from downstairs. I jumped up, eyes widening as I rushed toward the door.

"Oh no, not again."

Leaving my room, I noticed Rose coming out of her room as well. I stopped her before she could follow me.

"Stay in your room. I'll take care of this."

"But-"

I held my arm out, not letting her pass me. She finally sighed and backed away toward her room. I turned and ran downstairs to see Violet on the floor in front of our dad. Great, he's been drinking again.

"How many times have I told you girls not to bother me when I'm watching the game!"

"I'm sorry! I just wanted a snack!"

Tears streamed down her face as dad raised his fist to hit her. I quickly jumped in front of Violet, feeling my dad's fist come in contact with my back.

I winced, gazing down at Violet. I quietly told her, "Violet, go to your room. Now."

She nodded, sniffing back tears, and got up and ran up the stairs. I stood up and turned toward my dad.

"That's enough! We're not interrupting your stupid ball game!"

"Azalea Valentine, what do you think you're doing?!"

I narrowed my eyes as I gazed up at him. "You take things too far! If you'd stop wasting your life away on ball games and alcohol, maybe you'd find that there are better things to do!"

He suddenly brought his hand up and slapped me across the face. Even though it stung, I kept my stern gaze on him, determined to not back down.

"Tch, damn kids. Too much like your mother."

With that being said, he walked around me, picking up his drink and plopping down on the couch. A quiet sigh of relief escaped my lips and I quickly went to the kitchen.

I started making sandwiches for my sisters and me. If only mom was here. She was killed in a car accident when we were young. Dad hadn't been the same ever since and we were the one's supporting him.

But honestly, if he'd just get over it and move on like the rest of us have. We miss her too, but you don't see us throwing our lives away over it.

Finishing the sandwiches, I got a thing of soda and went back upstairs. I went to Violet's room, nudging open the cracked door. I looked over at Rose, who quickly stood up.

"What happened? Are you okay?"

I smiled at her and Violet. "I'm fine. I made sandwiches."

Violet looked like she might start crying again as she stood up and hugged me. "Thank you so much, Azalea."
