Chapter 6
When Allie Louis threw open her bedroom door, Ike Hollis was standing there - tall, dark, handsome and holding a bouquet of pink carnations. She stared at him warily, fighting down the jolt of happiness that rushed through her just because of him.
"Allie!", he said beaming at her.
She slammed the door in his face and twisted the lock.
"Aw, come on, Allie," Ike called through the door. "it's been a week. Well, a week and three days. But who's counting. I miss you. I keep calling you but you won't call me back. I really think you should let me explain. I know what we both felt that night and I think we should talk about it."
"I don't", Allie said to the door, running her fingers through her wet hair. She shook her head and turned to cross the obstacles of Kate's clothing to get to the window seat and her novel.
"Come on, Allie open up." Ike pounded on the door. "We can be adults about this. Or you could be an adult about this and I could just fake it."
Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Private Drive...
Ike knocked again. "Allie? You want me to grovel because I can grovel. I've got a great grovel. Come on, Aliie, just give me a chance to explain."
Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Private Drive...
Ike leaned against Allie's door and analyzed the situation. He's been pounding for at least half an hour and it was obviously not getting anywhere and his charm was failing too, which was a first time for him. Usually he could mouth his way out of every situation. Maybe she was still mad but she couldn't be that mad. Couldn't she see that what happened last night was something worth pursuing.
All right, so he deserved to get the door shut in his face for what he did. Now all he had to do was get her to open it again. Maybe if he waited an hour she might open her door, thinking he'd left.
Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Private Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonesense.
Someone knocked on the door.
Must be my grandmother wondering what all the racket was earlier, Allie thought cracking the door open. It was Ike.
"I know you're upset so I won't be long. I brought something to help my case" He smiled at her holding a pack of oreos. "Double Stuffed."
"Okay," Allie sighed and opened the door. "What do you want to talk about Ike?"
"Look I may not have the right name but I'm the guy."
"Why did you lie to me like that?"
"It was an emergency. I literally had to. It was the only way I knew I could stop you. And I knew if I didn't stop you I would never see you again."
"You're going to start coming to our school this semester. I hardly believe you thought you were never ever going to see me again." Allie said raising an eyebrow.
"But I didn't know that then." Ike started pacing around in the hallway. "Okay look. I wasn't even supposed to be in Chaston. I was supposed to be staying in Phillips leading a very boring life. My brother was supposed to be the one who would take care of my grandfather. But he got the chicken pox. The chicken pox at 24 which in itself is a miracle! And so they left me instead. And I was not supposed to be in that bar last night but I was. I was going to see a movie but it got sold out so my friends dragged me over to the bar. And then I saw you with your red shoes. And you're the one. So I had to look for some way to keep you from going away and never seeing you again. And I said please God give me a way to keep her here. And the name came up."
"If that's not destiny I don't know what is." Ike finished taking Allie's hand in his.
"Look that sounds incredibly romantic." Allie said. "Is it a lie?"
"For crying out loud!", Ike groaned. "It was a name. A name of a guy who could possibly be the biggest loser in the world."
"He is not a loser." Allie called instantly coming to her other half's defense.
"Okay. That was out of context but all I'm asking is to give me a chance to be in your life." He smiled at her his dark eyes briming with confident charm. A lock of hair had fallen over one eye which made him look charming and endearing.
Allie thought about it and she really did enjoy Ike's company. Just as long as he didn't make moves on her they could be platonic. Right? "Friends?"
Ike wrinkled his nose at the word but if it was the only way he could stay on her good side he'd take it. He could always convince her that they were meant to be together later.
"Friends."
