Chapter 13

Ike lay on the ER bed, trying to remember what had happened. He'd been staring at Allie, watching the breeze flutter through the ends of her curls, and then that club had come out of nowhere and----

"Ike?" Allie said, leaning over him. The fluorescent light above back-lit her hair and she looked like an angel again.

"Hi," he said.

"The nurse said your going to be all right," she said trying to look cheerful. "Tyler's just filling your prescription." She pointed towards the counter. "For the pain. In case you have a heache. Does your head hurt?"

His head felt like it was about to crack open. "Yes."

Tyler opened the bottle and dumped two pills in his palm. "Here," he said, handing them to him. "One for you and one for me."

Allie rolled her eyes and took hold of the two pills to hand them off to Ike. "I'll get water."

Ike thought about telling her that the nurse had already given him some earlier and then he decided that the damn thing wasn't working fast enough, two more would be good.

"You scared us," Tyler said, when Allie had walked away. "You got hit in the head. People get killed that way. All because you weren't paying attention."

Ike propped himself up. "Harry," he said bitterly.

"I'm sure he'll be sorry," Allie said, when she came back with the water. "After he gets over how far his ball landed after the swing."

"Little bastard," Ike said, without heat. "Was there music? I could swear I heard---"

"---- Billy Joel singing 'She's Always A Woman'. " Allie nodded.

"Lilly had it on the radio. Which is weird because I don't think it gets a lot of airplay." Tyler said. "I called your old man and told him you were okay and Allie was taking you home."

"You're taking me home?" ike said.

"Yes," Allie said. "Tyler is going to go back to the driving range and reassure the kids. They were pretty traumatized when we left."

"I'm going to drive your grandfather back to the nursing home and Allie's grandmother to her place." Tyler assured. "So don't worry, man. Just get better... You've even got a hot nurse by your side." He dropped his voice so only Ike could hear the last words before walking towards the double doors.

"So," Ike said and focused on Allie. "You cut your hair."

"Kate took me to the stylist," Allie said. "To go with the new clothes."

"I liked your old hair." His eyes dropped to her dress, looking through the thin fabric, and he almost fell off the table.

"Easy," Allie said, breatheless as she tried to prop up his weight, and he looked down the open neck of her dress and saw the baby blue lace.

"Blue," he said.

"Oh, good you're feeling better," Allie said, rolling her eyes. "Come on. I'll take you home."

"Okay," Ike said. "I like your new hair, too."

Half and hour later, Allie pulled up in front of Ike's apartment, they would have gotten there earlier if she didn't have to follow his increasingly groggy directions.

"Come on," she said opening the car door for him.

"Wait a minute," he said, and she stopped so he could get his bearings, but he put his hands on her curls again. "Springy."

"Right," she said and she herded him upstairs to his apartment. She steered him through a living room filled with uncomfortable looking modern furniture into a bedroom. "How are you feeling?" she asked guiding him to his bed.

"Better," he said, groggily. "The drugs just kicked in."

"There you go," she said. "Always look on the bright side." She heaved him on the bed and he laughed as he bounced when he laid down."Just how many pills did you take?"

"Just one. two. four." He kicked off his shoes and held up seven fingers.

She hoped his fingers were wrong. "We didn't save you from a concussion to die of a drug overdose." She picked up his feet and threw it on the bed. He rolled just as she shoved and knocked them both off balance. She grabbed him to save herself from rolling to the other side of the bed, and he pulled her down with him.

"I should be awake in about eight hours," he yawned into her hair. "Stick around."

"Get off," she said into his chest, ignoring the incesstant pounding going off on her own. He didn't say anything, so she pushed against him again, but it was like trying to push through a brick wall. She stopped to consider the situation. If she pushed him too hard, he might roll off and hit his head on the metal bedside table. She looked up at him, his face so close that she could see his individual lashes. He looked like a god.

"It is so unfair," she said to him. "Couldn't you at least drool or something?"

He began to snore in her ear.

"Forget I said that." She said and squirmed around trying to get one foot on the floor to shove him off. He put a leg over hers, effectively pinning her to his bed.

She realized the hopelessness of the situation and looked around his room. It was painted in beige and looked like it was ripped off from the pages of a lifestyle magazine. "You are so weird," she said to him. "This place does not look like you at all.

He breathed deeper, and she looked at his face. She looked at the hard planes on his face, the soft flutter of eyelashes that rested on top of his cheeks and the perfectly shaped lips that parted as he slept, and thought. Oh, the hell with it. She turned over and returned to reality. Every woman who laid eyes on him probably thought that when they looked at him so it wasn't as if...

She stared at the ceiling and at a loss of what to do next, fell to sleep next to him. She could wake up later when he rolled off her.
