Chapter 14

Allie opened one eye and immediately closed it again, having felt a stabbing pain through her eye that indicated that more sleep was necessary.

Except that she couldn't sleep anymore. She couldn't sleep anymore because something was wrong. Just what that something was, she couldn't put a finger on- not without opening an eye again, which she was reluctant to do, given the pain that the light in the room shot into her eyes the first time.

Still. Something wasn't right. Something was in fact very, very wrong. She did not think, for some reason, that she was back in her own bed in hers and Kate's shared room. For one thing, her room was painted in soothing blues and lavender. She hadn't seen either of those colors when she's cracked her eye open. Instead she'd seen a combination of soothing creams and beiges.

And another thing, she was fairly certain she was not alone. There was definetly an arm beneath her head. Not just beneath her head, either. No, there was another arm draped across her, as well.

And then memory came flooding back, and Allie realized where she was, what she was doing there, and who the hand belonged to.

She tried to sit up but the arm that was draped around her tightened. She stopped to consider the situation.

"Okay," she said, and squirmed around until she got one foot on the floor and pushed off, toppiling Ike over onto his back in the middle of the bed, which started his snoring.

She looked around and realized it was still four in the afternoon and the light that was stabbing her eyes had come from a gap in his bedroom curtain. Then, at a loss of what to do next, she patted his shoulder and left.

Later that day, when Allie pushed in the door of her room, Kate looked up looking excited. Then she saw a one-eyed animal looking at her. "What is that?"

"It's a cat." Allie said. "I found it lying outside on the front porch. It must have followed me home when Ike and I had lunch at Michelangelo's. I wonder why it only revealed itself today."

"That is one freaky looking cat." Kate said, eyeing the mangy feline as it made it's way to the window seat. "I asked Darlene from the hospital to check if there were any babies named Alaric that was born in 1994 and there was only three babies born with that name. I then checked the family names of any old women that died in 2003 and I found him."

"Oh," Allie said, a little too quietly and thought, I shouldn't be thinking about Ike when Kate just found Alaric. My soulmate, my one true love. Finding him would fix everything.

"I really don't think this is a good idea but I'll support you anyway." Kate rolled her eyes.

"It's like being a prince," Allie said, eyes glazing over.

Kate looked at her.

"In the fairytale," Allie explained. "He has to go on quests to find the princess. Only this time, the princess looks for the prince. And if the prince is a pompous dick face, the princess could just walk away knowing the prince isn't the one for her."

"Wait a minute. Not the same thing." Kate said, trying to head off disaster."I was fine with using a fairy tale as a metaphor. But you have to realize, Al, that this is real life. No prince, no stepmother, no poisoned apple and possibly no happy ending."

"But I have known my whole life that sooner or later my prince would come." Allie said to Kate. "And I've already met him years ago."

"I can't belive you're actually pulling me into this." Kate said to Allie. "He stays at his parent's golf club at Chaston every summer."

Here is Chapter 14 :) And yes, I really hated Allie here, too.

A little hint: Phillips, the school Ike is from, is in Chaston. So you'll be seeing more of him and Tyler.
