Chapter 15
When Allie came down after her talk with Kate, she decided to abstain from chocolate for a change. It was like quenching an addiction. She'd get over one to get over the other one. The other one being Ike Hollis.
"Not a problem," she told herself and went out to the kitchen. She plugged in the toaster and put in the bread. She then leaned against the kitchen counter and waited for the toast to pop. "I just have to follow the plan." No more chocolate, oreos and No more IKE. That should be easy to follow, she thought.
"Allie?" she heard her grandmother say through the archway in the living room.
"Gran," she said. "How was the ride over with Tyler?" Her toast popped, and she grabbed a jar of nutella. She looked at it, reminded herself of her vow and picked up a jar of peanut butter instead.
"He was a really um... social," she said starting to brush off the crumbs from the counter. "How was Ike? Is he okay?"
"He got a bump on the head but the doctor said he's going to be fine." Allie said, thinking, He definetly hadn't lost any of his strength when he pinned me down.
"That's good." she said humming a tune that sounded suspiciously like 'All the Single Ladies' and Allie thought, Now's a good a time as any.
"Gran, would you mind if me and Kate go off to Chaston for a bit?" Allie asked and grabbed a table knife to spread the peanut butter.
"Why would you go that far? Is there an errand you need to run?"
"Allie, wants to see her one twu wuve." Kate said bursting in the kitchen and grabbing Allie's sandwich.
Allie dropped the knife.
"So it's about that," her grandmother said. "But I thought we had talked about this and decided---"
"That it was a very bad idea," Allie said, grabbing her sandwich back. "But Gran, I just want to see him that's all."
Rosario paused and looked at her grandaughter. "Alright, but I'm going with you this time."
Allie sighed. "But we'd be a tight fit in the mini cooper. Your legs will just hurt."
"Then it's a good thing we can ask Ike to drive us to Chaston." Kate pipped in. "He used to live there. He could even offer to show us around."
"That lovely boy is going to be there?" her grandmother asked, her eyes gleaming with matchmaking possibilities.
"No, we are not asking Ike to drive us." Allie said, reaching again for her toast. "In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we never saw eachother ever agai--" Her fingers brushed the metal side of the toaster and she burned herself. "Damn it," she said and put her scorched fingertips into her mouth.
"Allie?" her grandmother said, walking to the other side of the kitchen counter and turning on the cold water.
"I burned myself on the toaster. Sorry." Allie stuck her fingers underneath a stream of cold water. "Anyway, I will not be seeing Ike Hollis again." She stepped away from the sink and stubbed her pinky toe on one of the open drawers. "Ouch."
"Allie?" Kate said.
"I stubbed my toe." Allie said as she hopped around on one foot and her head smacked into a cabinet. "Jeez."
"Is it bruised?" her grandmother asked.
"No. I..." She winced and hobbled to her bedroom. "I'll talk to you guys tomorrow."
She was sabotaging herself, that had to be it. She was distracted, she was hungry and thinking about Alaric. It had absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact that she had decided never to see Ike again.
