Chapter 9

Kate hooked her finger over the edge of Allie's paper and pulled it down so she could look into her friends eyes.

"You have a problem."

"Of course I have a problem." Allie said reasonably. "I have to find Alaric. Get your finger off my paper. You're smudging the news print."

"We've been at this for two days now." Kate looked disgusted. "You're officially on the crazy train."

"Your nail polish is chipped," Allie said hoping a chipped nail would divert Kate's attention from analyzing her every move.

"You've been waiting for this guy for the past eight years," Kate said glaring at her chipped nail. "Not even one of the guys you've dated made a dent in that deluded brain of yours."

Allie took a deep breath. "Dustin left his wallet so I had to pay for the meal. Peter told me that he thought males were far more superior to females. Terence just wanted someone to help him pull up his grades so he can stay on the football team. And you think I should have picked one of those men?"

"Frankly, I don't think you should have even talked to any of them," Kate said. "But just because they were idiots doesn't mean all men are. How about giving that Ike guy a chance?"

"You're a nut," Allie said. "Two days ago you were willing to commit first degree murder and now you want me to give him a chance?"

"That was two days before I saw you trying to rip this place to shreds looking for an eleven year old boy." Kate said. "Remember Mrs. Brushnam's flowershop? It still has restraining order on your head. She's got a court order that says you have to stay at least 3 feet radius from her and her shop."

"Of course, I remember." Allie frowned at the memory. "But it---"

"And that old woman--- what was her name, Andrews? The one at the park. Yeah the one who had a cardiac arrest from your constant interrogation." Kate said. "This is the exact same thing. You're on board the Alaric express train again. And what are the chances of that little boy turning into this amazing man? I'll tell you. A one in a billion."

Allie held on to her patience. "Why don't we just agree that we have no respect for each other's opinion and forget about it?"

"I can't help it, Allie." Kate said sitting down beside her. "Ever since you showed up at our doorstep looking like such a mess, raving about riding horses and true love and then flicking my Ken doll into the pool when I said I didn't like your clothes. " She smiled at Allie and shook her head. "I'd never seen anyone like you before."

Allie grinned back. "I felt the same way. I'd thought I was going to be left alone with a bunch of old people and you came in wearing blue eyeshadow and a feathered boa." She tilted her head and looked at Kate with deep affection. "I did try to save Ken from the pool cleaner."

"Which brings us back to the subject at hand----men."

"Kate," Allie groaned. "You're even more inept with men than I am. You keep dating spineless men who you treat like shit."

"Yes, but that's because I don't care." Kate said. "When I care, i will be ept."

"Well, when your ept, i'll listen." Allie tried to pick up another clipping but Kate slammed her hand on it again.

"Listen," Kate said, standing up. "Since I can't change your mind. I'm willing to try this your way."

"My way."

"Yes. Logic, reason or whatever you call it. Now, you want to find him, right?"

Allie looked wary. "Right."

Kate spread her hands apart. "So what have you done all your life every time you wanted something, other than Alaric?"

Allie looked even warier. "I made a plan?"

"Now, since your obviously irrational when it comes to this guy. I will be helping you with your plan." Kate reached down her red tote and fished out a pen.

"So the goal is to find your soulmate, right?"

"Right." Allie moved Kate's coffee cup away from the news clippings.

"So, what kind of prospects are we looking for, here?"

The bottom of Kate's coffee cup left a moist ring at the edge of the table, so Allie pulled out a napkin and started dabbing at the ring. "I already found my soulmate. It's Alaric. I don't need prospects."

Kate pulled a piece of paper aside and started jotting down, completely ignoring Allie. "Number one, he has to be hot."

"He does not," Allie said. "I'm not shallow."

Kate looked up at her patiently. "No, but your daddy's rich. You've got to find somebody who's got more going for them than money. Why not add hunkiness to the gene pool."

"We're seventeen." Kate glared. "Well, I'm seventeen, I'm not even thinking about getting married much less children."

Kate waved Allie's objection away. "Okay. number two. He has to be older than you by about, oh, five years."

"Why?" Allie looked mystified.

"Because you obviously have daddy issues."

"I do not. give me that." Allie snatched the pen and paper away from Kate. "All right. One, he has to be intelligent."

"Intelligent is boring." Kate whined.

Allie went on. "Not just bookish either. He has to be enigmatic and loves Billy Joel. He has to be well-manered. You know, a gentleman who'll open doors for me and pay the bill."

"A man from the eighteenth century?" Kate made a face. "That's your dream man?"

"And have a starling reputation," Allie said, caught up in the list. "Someone with good taste in music. Preferably Billy Joel."

"Your old music isn't considered good taste."

Allie waved the objection away. "And aggressive. he has to know what he wants and go after it."

"Okay." Kate picked up her coffee cup from the next table and tried to drink while Allie worked. "So when do we get to the good stuff?"

"Good stuff?"

"Great sense of humor. Gender Equality. Terrific at snogging. Loves you to the point of madness."

"Well, yes, of course." Allie looked down at her list. "Did I mention Billy Joel?"

"Several times." Kate grabbed the paper back. "Okay so your next step is finding the man so you could figure out he's not for you and you can discover other men."
