I was three months old when my parents figured out that I had cone monochromacy, a vision disorder. People knew it as colorblindness. My mother and father told me all the details once I was old enough to understand that I was different.

'"I know what's wrong here," Dr. Hemsworth informed. "Your son has cone monochromacy as far as I can tell. He can see different shades of gray ranging from black to white. He has a score of 6/9 for visual acuity which is good considering he has cone monochromacy, and I found out that he was near-sighted as well. I will check his eyes again, and you can pick out some frames that'll work for him."

"What about his eyes?" My mother asked, her voice cracking.

"Ah, yes, the reason you called him in for. Leo has nystagmus which is uncontrollable eye movement. To treat it, there's eye muscle surgery. It won't cure it, but it will help. The glasses, they will also help with his nystagmus.

Now, leo won't be able to do some of the things that other kids do. You'll have to help him pick out his clothes and...."'

Ever since then, I had to wear glasses for my near-sightedness, but it didn't really bother me. The problem was that I couldn't see color.

'"Look at it! Isn't it beautiful?" I hear my moms voice seep through my ears.

My family and I were currently on a road trip. We just moved from Italy to America, and we're now exploring every crevice of the country.

I looked outside to see nothing but shades of gray. "What is there to see, mama?" I asked her, my eyes squinting.

She pointed out the window from where she sat in the passengers seat. "Right there, sweetie," she said. "In the sky."

I then see it, but it's definitely not what I expected. There's just a series of dark grays mashed up together on the light gray sky. I scrunch my eyebrows together. "What's it called?"

She chuckled lightly, her blue eyes sparkling. "It's called a rainbow, my dear."

My sister leaned on me to see out the window. "It's so pretty!" Instead of fighting like usual siblings, the two of us get along quite well.

I looked out the window again, wondering what was so beautiful about the so called rainbow.'
