There was nothing that could stop me. I was going to see the inside of that mountain whether my friend liked it or not.

"(Y/n)! Come back!" Gaile yelled violently at me. My fingers tried for a crack in the stone, so I could climb my way to the top and inside. She pleaded and tried to grab my foot. With a thrash of my leg her hand fell away and I was free to continue scaling the mountainside.

Once I reached the top, I smiled widely in triumph. "Is gold really worth risking your life over?"

"I have no need or hunger for gold, Gaile. You should know. I'm only here to look upon the dragon. I hear he is hideous and terrifying."

Her face contorted in rage.

"That's because he is! DON'T BE STUPID, (Y/N)!"

"I BET HE'S THE MOST MAGNIFICENT CREATURE TO EVER WALK AMONG US SWINE!"

She huffed and began to venture back to Laketown without me. I could care less. The thought of being able to see him sent shivers through my spine. That's right! What was I still standing here for? I trailed through the magnificent halls, seeing coins scattered here and there. But I cared not for any coin.

A staircase led to another descending staircase, which let to a room. Upon entering the room, I gasped in awe. The amount of gold was stupendous. But there was no sign of the dragon.

"Aw.." I muttered. "None of the gold inside the mountain matters to me as much as seeing that dragon," I sat on the staircase in defeat. I picked up a coin laying beside my foot. There were small runes engraved on it. It was pretty, but it meant nothing to me. With a fling of my arm, it landed on the top of a distant mound of the fortune.

Gold and gems and treasures cascaded down from that spot to a valley below. But what was revealed convinced me that my dreams were not yet unfulfilled. It seemed as if the entire floor had rearranged when the beast stood.

"Oh my gods.." I said under my breath.

"Who are you to come and try to steal from me?" the fire drake bellowed. His voice was so deep and smooth that I didn't respond as soon as I should have. His beautiful dark scales and piercing yellow eyes mesmerized me to the point of speechlessness.

"SPEAK, THEIF!"

"OH! I-I truly am sorry.. I didn't mean to wake you."

"Why have you come, theif?"

"No, no! I assure you, I am no theif. I only," I paused, trying to get closer to him. "I only came to prove everyone wrong."

He seemed to like the conversation. Maybe, or he just thought that I was coming up with an entertaining alibi. "About what?" he asked.

"You. They say you are a hideous, terrifying beast. While I'm sure that you are more terrifying than their words can describe, I knew you couldn't be ugly."

"Continue.." he pressed.

"I had to see for myself that "Smaug the Terrible" wasn't as unsightly as they make you seem. I thought you were a beautiful, fierce creature of the night; with swords for teeth, unpiercable hide, and spears for claws. You are more beautiful than I ever could've imagined."

He shifted among the countless bounty under his weight. I could see the doubt in his eyes. "Your eyes.. They're so amazing."

"Do not think flattery will get you out of this, girl. You want the gold."

"I DO NOT!" I yelled at the creature with clenched fists. "Gold does not fill my desire. I want to see you! I want to look into your eyes and see the different colors. I want to see the details and scratches in your scales. I want see your wings, and feel them, if I may. I want to know you. Tell me stories, I'll tell you some if you'll let me," I say, almost running out of breath.

"Please don't keep your magnificence all to yourself. I want to witness your beauty."

"You ask for a lot of things, girl. And you are very brave for a human," he stated, walking past me with a certain glare. "And also very stupid."

"So I've been told," I replied with a cocky tone. I'd surely die here if I didn't control that.

"I'm willing to accept your presence here, human. But there are conditions."

"I'm willing to agree to any conditions you have," I said immediately, jumping up and down excitedly in my mind.

"You must live here, you are allowed to leave once a week for food. You are only allowed the amount of gold I specify, nothing more. And you must spend all of your time here with me. If any of these terms are violated, however..." he stood, towering over me menacingly. His stomach and throat began to glow fire red and orange around the edges.

"...YOU. WILL. BURN."

"AGREED!" I yelled in immediate compliance.

The days passed and I did as I was told. Only using the gold I specifically asked for, I would go by food and clothes from Laketown and return each week. I would look at his scales and claws and teeth, admiring every bit of him. I had been there for a few months and I still hadn't heard all of his stories. And what a great storyteller he was.

"And that's how I lost the scale beneath my right wing," he said. He finished the story just in time for me to start falling asleep. With his tail, he grabbed a blanket, and gently with his claw he placed me on the bridge of his snout.

This is where he liked me to sleep. He almost refused to sleep unless I was there. I didn't have a bed or pillows and he'd rather me stay in his sight.

"Smaug... Do you think those dwarves that used to live here will ever come back?"

"If they do... You know the consequences."

"They will burn."

"Good.. now sleep."
