I ate my breakfast with anger as my father read the newspaper and his wife served a plate for Byron.
"Is there anything else you need Cass?" Sharon asked politely.
"It's Cassandra and no, I'm fine." I said and cleaned up my place, making my way to school.
I walked through the doors and still felt everyone's eyes on me as I went. Boys still hollered at me while the girls turned back to their friends to gossip. I kept my head low as I dodged James and Austin in the halls. I felt as if they were following me.
Before lunch had started I went to my locker to exchange some books and saw Carson and Luke across the hall leaning against some lockers and talking. My view of them was blocked when a pair of thin legs appeared in front of me. I looked up and there stood Sandy with a devilish smirk on her face.
"Oh look, it's the whore." She cackled along with her friends and I tried ignoring her but it was no use. I tried to move past her but she just kept her stance in front of me.
"Where you going? Trying to go steal another girl's boyfriend? I'm shocked that you'd stoop so low Cassandra. Truly shocked. I mean, I know without a mother you need something to fill the void, I just didn't think it'd be this." she smirked in satisfaction when she noticed my eyes well up with unshed tears.
She then proceeded to knock my books out of my arms, making my papers fly everywhere. By now we had the attention of each student in the hall and I'm sure they heard each word she said. But they didn't care. It wasn't their problem.
She walked away, stomping her feet all over my notes and yelled another cruel joke about my mother. I knelt down and started picking up my papers when a hand touched mine. I looked up and saw Kara smiling weakly at me.
"Hey." She offered.
I stared at her for a moment. Her baby bump was evident by now and that's when I remembered she was pregnant, kneeling on the floor and helping me.
"You don't have to help. I got it." My voice was soft and I helped her up.
"I'm pregnant, I'm not your grandma's ancient vase." She laughed.
I laughed back and was happy to see a familiar face that made me feel safe.
"I'm sorry." We both said at the same time and hugged.
"I'm happy you'll at least talk to me again after I dropped the bombshell during break. Looking back it wasn't my best moment." She laughed and I was glad the air wasn't tense.
"Well, I could use all the friendship you're willing to give right now. I'm not anyone's favorite person at this moment." I shrugged.
Kara threw her arm over my shoulder and started to lead us off towards the cafeteria.
"Let's be outcasts together. I'm here for ya babe." I laughed at her slightly awkward voice but was glad to have at least one friend back.

"Hey, I got to go use the little girls room. Can you watch my stuff?" I asked Kara and she nodded.I thanked her and got up, walking out of the cafeteria and down the corridor seeing the pink labeled sign down the hall.
