I was late. I knew I was late.

Basically, there was a fight in the hallways near the exit of the school building at the end of the day, and unfortunately, my locker with everything that I needed was right at the scene, so I'd just texted my Mom telling her to head to the hospital on her own to avoid being late and that I'd just drive there myself to catch up with her.

I was late, I knew I was late, and I felt horrible - this was literally my second day and I'd already screwed up.

Shit, would being late affect my pay? What if Luke filed a complaint against me and they took like five dollars off my hourly salary, damn it!

I paused in the middle of the corridor leading up to Luke's unit to think it over, coming to the conclusion that it was better to be a little more safe than sorry.

Making my way towards the vending machine at the end of the hallway, I pulled out a dollar from one of the built-in compartments in my bad and slid it into the machine - okay, he can't have caffeine, right? Is there caffeine in chocolate? Of course there is, it's candy.

I grunted frustratedly and quickly pressed on the dark chocolate KitKats option. I was pretty positive that I'd seen aPinterest post talking about how dark chocolate was healthier than any other type of chocolate, anyway. I'm sure Luke would be able live with something a little tiny bit bitter.

He was Black Coffee, after all, right?

I bent down and reached my hand into the slot after hearing the thump of the chocolate hitting the bottom of the machine, grasping the KitKat bar within my fingers, and then made a run for it - down the hallway, up the stairs (because apparently, the elevator was malfunctioning) and down the left corridor. I exhaled relievedly once I'd finally made it to Luke's room, the white flag still standing proud on his whiteboard.

"Okay, so I know I'm late, but I'd really rather appreciate it if we just kept this little slip between the two of us, because I really can't afford for my pay to -" I paused, cutting myself off mid-sentence after finding Luke laying still in his bed with a blonde girl's chin rested on his abdomen. They'd both stopped their conversation to look up at me, confusedly. The red on my cheeks was probably almost too profound, because the girl had suddenly began to giggle. I cleared my throat, "My bad, sorry, should I come back later?"

"I'd love that," Luke said at the same time the blonde girl had stood up from her seat at Luke's bedside to say, "No, you're fine, I was just about to leave."
