Michael's birthday was a few months ago, November 20th.
A few days before, I told him that I would get him something - anything that he wanted. But then he told me that he wanted to go and see a Skrillex concert with me, which would involve me having to find a way to sneak us both out of the hospital since there was no way in shit the nurses would ever allow us out themselves. So, I corrected myself and told him I'd get him anything he wanted that wouldn't result in me being placed in the death penalty chair.
After calling me a shit best friend, he told me that he wanted a notebook instead.
I can clearly remember making a face and wondering why the hell he'd want something as pointless as a notebook for his birthday, but decided against questioning it. That night, I called Jackie and asked her to pick up a red, three hundred page notebook for Michael, because I certainly was not a shit best friend.
After Fallon left the hospital last night, I'd wanted to huddle with one of the stuffed elephants Michael had given me a while back before my first chemo as a good luck gift - only problem was that I had no idea where it was. Normally, it would be propped up at the head of my bed where my pillows were placed, but it wasn't there this time.
So of course, I'd turned my entire fucking room upside down in search of the damn elephant. I looked under my bed, in my bathroom, behind the couch, in my pillowcases - everywhere. It was nowhere.
Then, I pulled one of the drawers built into my nightstand open, my entire face falling once I found what was inside. The elephant wasn't there, but something else definitely was, and I'd recognized it immediately - it was the red spiral notebook that I'd given Michael for his birthday, with a sticky note placed on the cover. I picked the notebook up and bit on the inside of my bottom lip at the words written across the paper in blue ink;
Forget Me Not, Michael
Swallowing, I set the thought of the plush animal aside and flipped through the pages of the notebook, my eyes widening when I realized that each and every individual page was filled with words. I started from the beginning, only reading into about two paragraphs before feeling my eyes start to dampen - I'd figured out what it was.
