"You really don't think we could get away with breaking the minimum? Not even a little?"
"I doubt it," I shook my head humorously, turning down the corridor leading to the exit of the lecture hall. "The guy seemed pretty grounded on a 5k word policy."
Emma huffed her cheeks out in annoyance, pink lips forming a small pout as she pushed both of the glass doors open. "I'm not going to be able to make it through a year's worth of this class with a normal blood pressure, Fallon. I thought Hamlet was a sort of meat up until today."
I hummed at Emma acknowledgingly and took a moment to concentrate on the feeling of November sunlight kissing my skin. The air was brisk and fresh and sort of smelled like the coffee and cinnamon spices coming from the campus pastry-shop. With the sound of leaves crunching beneath my boots, it was impossible to not take a minute to relish in it all. I turned back to the brunette, grinning at her challengingly. "Shouldn't have Sparknoted your way through high school, then."
Emma gasped and shoved her shoulder into my own, eliciting another laugh out of me. "We just met three weeks ago, you're not supposed to know about my cheating abilities yet!"
I poked my tongue out at the communications-major teasingly and reached into my purse to pull out my ID and wallet. Both were needed in order to get onto the campus shuttle – I figured that one out the hard way.
"You're sure you don't want a ride home? I've only been on that thing once but I vividly recall it smelling like cat piss." Emma scrunched her nose up as I set my books down on the shuttle-stop bench and moved to take a seat on it. "We could stop for sushi?"
"I would, I swear, but it's my boyfriend's last clear-test today and I'm supposed to pick him up from the hospital in like, twenty minutes." I exhaled distraughtly and propped my elbows up onto my knees, letting my head fall into my hands. "Besides, you have a project to work on. You have no time for california rolls."
Emma grunted and shoved her fist into my
shoulder lightheartedly, folding her arms across her chest. "I'd be pissed at you if you weren't already stressed out enough."
"Who wouldn't be?"
"You shouldn't be. He's surprised you before by making it out okay, and I know you have faith that he'll do it again. Don't doubt him, now." She eyed me warningly for a moment before fishing her own keys out of her pocket, her eyes glinting as she looked back up at me, cheekily. "Now, if you excuse me, I have california rolls to attend to."
I snickered and watched as she strolled right past me, headed for the student parking lot, a bit of extra spring in her step. "Save me one!"
"I'm good!" She called back and peered over her shoulder with a wave, laughing.
I scoffed and turned back around to face the empty shuttle lot – it wouldn't be here for another fifteen minutes. Quickly, I pulled my phone out to send a text to Luke letting him know that I'd be a little late, my call-tone immediately going off after I had pressed send. I grinned nostalgically at the middle-school photo that'd come up along with the caller ID – Adrianne.
