Dirk's POV
Text from Maddie 6:13 I need a ride to school early, can you take me??
I shot her a quick "yea" and got dressed to pick Maddie up.
Reader's POV
You stroked the black cat's back gently, Dave glaring at it from behind.
"I hope you don't love that cat more than me," Dave said as he dropped your backpack. "You know, we're gonna be late."
Today was a normal day, other than it being the day after your foster parents got arrested. It had been on the news last night, but you were too tired to watch.
You said a quick goodbye to the cat and stood up. A smile was on your face. Today might have a been a normal day, but it was definitely a good day. You were comfortable, Dave was by your side, and the sun was shining.
You and Dave finally arrived at school, actually pretty early. The halls were usually empty at this point in the morning so you weren't expecting any one to be there. Dave held the door for you and was still carrying your backpack on his shoulders.
"I can take that now," you urged, trying to steal the bag from his shoulders.
Dave shook his head and his cheeks went red. What's his problem this morning? You ignored him and continued to lead him down the halls.
As soon as you turned the corner at the end, you saw an entire line of lockers- including yours- covered in yellow post-it notes. Written in darker blue post-its were the words "Happy Birthday, (Y/N)!!"
Maddie and Michaela were waiting in front of the lockers with bunches of balloons and presents in their arms and great big smiles on their faces. "Happy birthday!" They cried aloud.
Dave wrapped his arms around you from behind. He placed his mouth next to your ear and whispered, "Happy birthday, my princess. Open your locker..." His lovely voice faded away.
Your heart swelled with happiness and you burst into tears slowly walking over to your locker. After a few minutes of fumbling with the lock, you managed to pop it open. You pried the edge of your locker forward.
Inside your locker were photos of you and Dave plastered up and down, post-it notes here and there with things like, "Your laugh is contagious" and "I love the way your hair feels between my fingers" written in Dave's handwriting. Particularly one picture- no, drawing- stood out to you- it was you and him standing together in fancy outfits underneath a banner that said, "Prom, 2016!"
"Will make me the happiest man in the world and go to prom with me, (y/n) (m/n) (l/n)?"
You turned to face him, your eyes red with tears. "Y-yeah." You choked out.
...
...
...
"SHE SAID YESSSS!!" Maddie and Michaela were both screaming and bouncing up and down.
Dave dove into your arms and lifted you up, spinning you around in a big circle. His forehead was pressed to yours and his arms were tight as if he was afraid that if he let you go, you might slip away.
