Chapter 37

"See you in a few," Dave grinned, kissing your cheek softly.

"See you," you responded warmly.

...

You had gotten your hair done and were now in Kanaya's hotel room because Dave was at your guys' apartment so. It's not like a wedding where the groom can't see the bride, but Dave was gonna pick you up in his new car and some shit so it was gonna be hella cool this way.

You were in your dress, admiring yourself in the mirror. You could imagine Dave next to you, his hands firm on your hips, his hair tickling your forehead. You could practically feel his lips brushing yours as he pressed closer.

"Dave will be stunned, (Y/N)." Kanaya's voice whispered into your ear, stirring you from your day dream. Good thing, too- you were on the borderline of excessive. Jeez.

"Dave left the house," Jade reads from your phone screen. "He says he'll be here, soon."

You squealed with joy for the first time in a long time. You've come a long way since chapter one- a long time since you didn't know Dave at all.

"Is everyone ready?" Rose asked peeking in our adjoined room doors. Kanaya nodded and whispered something in Rose's ear. Rose smiled in response.

"Let's go wait downstairs, (Y/N)." Jade hurried me out of the door in her black spacey dress. She was going with a boy named Henry. He was goofy and silly- just the way Jade liked her guys.

You all took the elevator down, but had to take multiple due to your group size. You guys raced down, and sadly, your elevator arrived last. You all congregated by the doors. Kanaya and Rose were the first to leave because they had to pick up food and cake. They were followed by Equius and Nepeta, Aradia and Sollux, John and Megan (a total red head meme that's into Haikyuu!!), Aradia and Sollux, Tavros and Gamzee, etc. until it was just you and Jade and Henry. Dave hadn't shown up yet.

"He'll be here," Jade said positively, as she played with Henry's suit. He was terribly uncoordinated, and had a very unnoticeable lisp, so she was fixing him up. "He'll be here. He's probably shining his new car just for you."

"Thanks, Jade." It had been 15 minutes since he was supposed to arrive. It seemed like he was never going to arrive. "You guys go on. I'm sure he's only a few minutes away."

"Are you sure?" Henry asked. He was extremely kind-hearted, so if you need a favor, he'll do it.

"Yeah, I'm sure. Go on. Enjoy yourselves," you told them. They should make the best of their night.

"Okay. Bye, (Y/N)!" Jade waved as she got into her car and drove off with Henry in the passenger's seat.

You sat down in the swingy bench in front of the hotel, humming softly to Shadow by Birdy. PS GREAT SONG (below)

Ten minutes had past and you've gone through the song almost three times. You noticed a car that reminded you of Kanaya's car. It pulled up to the curb in front of you and the door flung open. Rose sprung out, her cheeks stained with mascara. She ran to you as you stood up. She wrapped her arms tight around your shoulders.

Your heart stopped. "R-Rose??" You stuttered as your stomach dropped. "Rose, why are you crying?"

"I'm so, so sorry, (Y/N)," She managed to choke out.

What happened? Dave- something happened to Dave.

Kanaya stepped out of her car and spoke up. "(Y/N), Dirk had a breathing issue while he was going to pick up Dave's new car. They crashed into a tree, and well..."

No.

No.

Not another car crash.

Something must be wrong with my life.

It's my fault.

You looked up towards the sky. "What have I ever done to you?" You screamed at it. You didn't care if there was one god, or more than one, or none at all. You were angry with fate. "What did I do to deserve this?"

Kanaya pulled the sobbing Rose away from you. You collapsed onto the ground without Rose's support. What was there to live for anymore? Why should you put effort into something for which there is no purpose? Dave was gone.

Kanaya dialed someone's phone number, but you couldn't hear a single word of her conversation over your screams. Several of the hotel staff came out to see the commotion but Kanaya shooed them away.

A few minutes later, another car pulls up. Equius and Nepeta step out and walked over to you. Together (Nepeta supporting/caressing your head) they lift you up off of the ground and carefully set you in the back seat of their car.  Nepeta is careful to buckle your seat belt.

They begin to drive you towards northern Milwaukee, following a GPS. After talking the highway and some regular roads, you arrive at a hospital. Why here? Did I injure myself? Suddenly, words you had only heard, not processed earlier came to mind. They are in the ER.

You took another heart-wrenching sob and wiped your tears on a blanket which Nepeta had wrapped around you. "Is he- he here?" Nepeta leaned around the seat and shook her head yes.

You stepped out of the car, and as soon as your foot hit the pavement, you were running.

Hang on. Please don't go. Don't go. Don't leave me. Please...
