I thought I'd been lucky enough not to bump into Laurence or Lucinda for the rest of the day, but the moment I walked into AP History class, I knew my lucky had run out.
Laurence, who was seated on the chair I usually claimed, looked up. I held his gaze for a moment. I felt my anger rising at the sight of him, so I looked away and took a seat at the back of the classroom. He was a year ahead of me, but I'd always shared at least one of my advanced classes with him, and today, I wished I didn't have to.
"For the entire school year, this class will do all the activities by pairs unless stated otherwise,"our teacher Mr.Kenmur, said. He lifted his clipboard and announced the pairings. When Mr.Kenmur read my name and Laurence's out loud, I wished I heard him wrong.
Then he told everyone to switch seats so we could sit next to our "buddies." Half the class stood up, filling the room with the sound of chairs grinding against the floor as everyone shuffled to their new seats. Laurence turned to look at me, but I didn't move. The girl beside me stood up to sit elsewhere, and Laurance must have taken this as his cue to stand up, grab his bag, and walk over to me. As we sat there, I found myself cursing him in my head, not just for leaving me, but fir leaving me with memories that were stuck in my mind on repeat, reminding me that the only thing left us were this fading images of what used to be and this unbridgeable distance between us.
"Hey,you." Someone called out
I paused. Sure enough, it was Travis. He was walking across the parking lot toward me when i looked up. As he got closer, I realized that he wasn't coming toward me. I heard a jangle keys. He was probably parked next to my car. "I didn't see you at lunch today," he said jusy as I unlocked my car door.
I turned to him. "You were looking for me ?"
"Maybe"
I slid into the driver's seat. Before I could pull the door close, he said, "Are you coming to Garroth Ro'meave's party Friday night ?"
I paused then looked at him long enough to study his face. Travis kept his bright green eyes on me while waiting for my reply. I coudn't help but put my guard up.
"I'll think about it," I lied as I pulled the door shut. I started the engine, determined to leave as soon as i could. I snuck one last look at Travis, who had an amused look on his face. I reminded myself tha asking girls out out was nothing but a game to peaple like him.
And i refused to play with him
The next day, as soon as the luch bell rang, I jumped out of my seat to get out of my AP Lit class and leave the campus to have lunch elsewhere.
"Found you."
I let out a shriek. I looked at my right to find Travis leaning against the wall, arms crossed, and a lazy smile plastered across his face.
"What are you doing here?"
"I was just wondering where you always disappear to have lunch," he replied
" That's bordering on creepy, Valkrum."
He pushed himself off the wall, shoved both hands in his pockets, andlifted his shoulders in a lazy shrug.
We started to walk.
"How about the party tomorrow night, Y/S/N? Have you decided?"
"Did simeone put you up to this?"
Genuine confusion crossed his face. Thrown off, I cleared my throat and averted my gaze. "I just find it wierd that you're so persistant," I explained
"I was just trying to say thanks for the pen."
"It's just a pen, Valkrum." I began to walk toward the parking lot. "Stop bugging me."
I heard him fall into step behind me."I would hardly call this bugging." "I'll come show tomorrow," I said, turning around to face him." But that's it. I'll show up and you're never going to bother me again." He smirked. "That's usually the way it goes."
I scoffed, but before I could say anything, he was already walking away. He trapped the hood of my car twice and gave me a triumphant smirk before turning around to leave.
When i stepped into the kitchen, I found mom studying some documents. For a second, I just stood there, realizing it's been so long since I was alone with her.
It took her a while to notice me, but when she did, she merely glanced at me before focusing back on what she was doing. I would have asked what she wanted for dinner, bit I was familiar with this scenerio. She would just reply with "I'm busy" or "Maybe next tim," so I decided to leave her alone.
I wasn't shure how we drifted apart.
After dad died, she started to immerse herself more in her work, and I just got used to her absence.
Laurance knew about the strained relationship I had with Mom, and he always made an effort to kep me company or to call when niether of us could come over to the other's house.
If Laurence wad to busy, Lucinda would would call me up for a sleepover or a movie marathon.
Laurance and Lucinda were always ready to fill my loneliness. Not having them around now magnified the emptiness of my home, which held lingering impressions of all the peaple who left me behind.
