The red and green sign shone brightly overhead, and written on it was the name "Adelina" in a white, bold, fancy script with a small "1898" underneath it.
Suddenly, I felt unsteady for a completely different reason altogether.
I thought back to all those nights when Dad and I would drive out here. He loved Italian food. We would drive up here to eat when he was carving for some lasagna or pesto, and he always, always, ordered a basket if garlic bread for us to share.
Travis and I went into the resturant. His friends were already seated at a table corner of the room. We walked toward them.
I haven't been here for years. As my eyes swept across the room, glimpses of my childhood flashed before my eyes. I saw the table by the leftmost corner of the room where Dad always preferred to sit, and I remembered how he'd give me the meatballs oh his spaghetti just because he knew how much I loved them. I saw the old-fashioned bell hanging by the door-the one customers were supposed to ring on their way out if they enjoyed their meal-and remembered how he'd hoist me up so I could reach it.
"Everything all right?"Travis asked me, slowing down to match my pace.
I nodded and managed to say, "Yes"
He wasn't convinced, but he didn't try pry either.
"What I'm saying,"Eclipse said just as Travis and I arrived, "Is that the only proper eay to eat pizza is by picking it up as it is. Using forks and knives is just out of the question."
"But what if it's really fine dinning resturant?"Dante asked. "Eating with your hands would make you like someone who has no table manners."
"So be it," Eclipse said. "You can't give any situation that would make me change my mind."
Travis pulled out a chair and restured fo me to sit.
"What about dinner with the Queen of England ?" Lala said.
Eclipse just rolled her eyes. "I'll only convince her I'm doing it right."
Travis leaned forward, a playful smile forming across his lips.
"What if your hands are dirty and there was no way for you to was or clean them ?"
Eclipse opened her mouth, preparing to retort, but then she closed it and thought for a while. Finally, she let out a frustartion groan.
"Fine. Then, I'll eat pizza with a knife and fork," she said before glaring at Travis.
Travis laughed, shaking his head as he starightened up in his seat. I watched him, almost transfixed because somehow, I could almost aee what all those other girls saw in player luke Travis Valkrum.
Dinner with Travis and his friends was comfortable and fun, much like lunch was yesterday.
Halfaway through dessert, I
Excused myself to go to the washroom. I was suprised when Eclipse and Lala offered to come with me. I wasn't sure how I'd manage talking to Travis's friends without him around. I coudn't stop myslelf from looking over my face broke into a reassuring smile.
"We're glad you came today," Lala said as we walkwd toward the restroom.
"I know you're not an Id### yet," Eclipse said jumping in before I could reply, "but it's been a while since the last time he'd ever taken a girl seriously, and we're just so happy you're not like the others."
I was about to speak, but them my eyes caught something. My mother was in the resturant, too. She was still in her work clothes, with her hair shook of her usual updo and a relaxed smile plastered axross her face.
The sudden pause made Eclipse and Lala turn to me with worried glances, asking me if i was all right, but their voices sounded muffled. My other senses had just shut down to focus on my mother and the guy she was sitting with.
Perhaps he was a client, a workmate, or just a friend who she happened to bump into, but the glimmer in her eyes told me their meeting something more that work-related matter.
Before i knew it, I was walking over to where she was seated.
She didn't notice me until I was standing right next to their table When she looked up, it was almost satisfying to see her do a double take. She sat back, removing her elbows from the table and accidentally knocked a glass of water. It spilled across the white tablecloth, but she grabbed the glass before it rolled off the table.
"Finished work early?"
"Y/N." She cleared her throat and removed the napkin on her lap, placing it on the table before rising from her seat. "Let's talk outside." She excused herself from her date before putting a hand on my shoulder, as if to lead me out, but I shookher hand off and walked ahead of her.
As soon we were out the door, she said, "This isn't what you think it is-"
"Oh, it's not?" I snapped, whirling around to look at her.
"I have spent the last few years eating dinner alone and telling myself it's fine, because you're working hard, and atleast I can do is stay out of your way. And now I find you eating out here with that mab. What am I suppised to think mom?"
"Y/N, I know you're upset-"
"Of course, im upset!" I walked right up to her, keeping my eyes on hers without daring to look away. "You hardly ever talk to me. Last week. You even asked me how Laurance and I were doing." I barked out loud. "We broke up weeks ago, Mom."
She blinked. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I did," I said.
"I'm sorry. It's just that I've been so busy-"
"Having dinner with your bofriend?"
Anger sparked in her eyes. "I can have dinner with whomever I wasn, Y/N. I am a grown woman, and I am capable of making decisions without consulting my daughter first."
"Well, that explains why you never talk to me."
"Y/N, stop making this difficult! I wasn't sure how to tell you because I knew you would react this way."
I scoffed, shaking my head in disbelief. "You have no right to say you know me hardly even know half the sh## I'm going through."
I took a step back, and before the words could even come out of het mouth, I was already shaking my head." You know what? I hope you had a nice time."
"Y/N-"
I walked back into the restaurant, pushing past the door and maneuvering my way through the tables as quickly as I could.
Travis stood up the moment he saw me. "Hey."
I noticed him look over my shoulder, and when I followed his gaze, I saw my mother walking through the door, her eyes roaming the restaurant lookung for me.
I looked away before our eyes could meet. I knew there was no way I,could face her. There was no way I could force myself to breathe the same air she was breathing.
I turned to Travis and found myself saying 7 words I never thought I'd say to him
"Can I crash at your place tonight?"
