The last thing I wanted to do was go to my history class. Still, it wasn't like I could cut class.
I half expected Laurance to say something about what happened, but he kept quiet. All I needed to do was sit and pretend I didn't know him for the next hour, but Mr.Kenmur chose this day to give us a seatwork halfaway through the lecture.
The rest of the class came to life, dragging chairs closer to each other's partners. The room was instantly filled with chatter. I sat there, seething, cursing my luck at the st*pid buddy rule and the study seatwork, before finally deciding the the only thing I could do was get it over with.
I turned to Laurance." I'll work on the first five items," I said.
"We're supposed to brainstorm together," he pouted out.
" No one would know the difference," I snapped back.
We both ignored each other as we worked, i stark contrast to the way everybody else around us was working.
I was almost done with my part when he suddenly spoke again.
" I dropped by your house," he said quietly.
I didn't look at him, but I stopped scribbling almost involuntarily.
When I didn't say anything, he said, "You weren't there. You never came home."
" And your point is?" I snapped again.
"Where we're you?"
He looked at me, his face blank. I stared back and hoped he could see my anger. I kept my eyes on his, cold unyielding, and let my lips take the form of a smirk before answering. "Do you even have to ask?"
I walked to the parking lot where Travis was waiting for me. The smiled vanished from his face. He pushed himself off his car, a jolt of alarm briefly coursing through his searching Green eyes.
"What's wrong?"
I looked up at him. I was pissed at how easily he could read me.
Before I could stop myself, I said, "Question Game."
" Sure."
I asked him something that had been creeping at the back of my mind since the day I realized Travis hated Laurance just as much as Laurance loathed Travis.
"Why do you and Laurance hate each other so much?"
He looked at me for a long time.
"Remember what I told you about my mother cheating on my Dad?"
My heart dropped to my stomach.
"Cedric hates me," he began I didn't miss the hint of anger that seeped into his voice. "Because my mom was having an afffair with my Dad."
-
The ride to my house was silent.
I'd seen Laurance's dad. He was the kind of guy who cracked jokes and nursed stray cats with missing eyes. He was the kind of guy who would keep his ex-wife's picture on display even though she gad walked out on him years ago, just so Laurance woudn't end of hating his own mother.
There was no way he'd have an affair with a married woman.
Only when we rounded into my street did I remember that I had problems to deal with. The house came into view and I suddenly panicked.
I still hadn't thought of how I should face my mother after our argument. If I had another choice, I would have chosen to never go home at all.
As soon as Travis parked the car in front of our house, he said,
"Let me talk to her, too."
"What?"
He turned the car's engine off and took the keys out. "You're going to introduce your boyfriend to your mother, (Your Surname)."
Before I could protest, he was already getting out of the car.
"Are you out of your mind?" I hissed at him, but he was already walking toward the front porch.
I ran to catch up with him, grabbing him by the elbow to keep him from getting any closer to the door. '' Go home, Travis."
"Look." He turned to me, making eye contact. " I can see you're not ready to face her yet."
I stopped short.
"So let me help you," he said.
before i could even decide werther I should accept his offer or not, the front door swung open, and out came my mom.
The three of us just stood there, silently sizing each other up and waiting for the first person to make a move. Mom's eyes ranked over Travis and she pressed her lips in the line before turning her steely eyes on me. I stared back, unyielding. I wanted her to see that I was pissed off as she was.
It was Travis who broke the silence. " Good evening, Mrs. ( Your last name)
. I'm Travis Valkrum," he continued, "(your Name)'s boyfriend."
Mom's eyes narrowed at the word, but she didn't reply. She made no effort to hide her frown as she turned back to me.
"It's nice of you to finally come home,"
"That"s funny," I shot back. " I've lost count of how may days I've wanted to say those exact same words to you."
I saw a flickering hurt in her eyes that I almost wanted to take the words back, but she quickly removed. i knew that things between us weren't going to get fixed yet.
They might never get fixed ever.
As soon as Travis left on my insistence, Mom said, "I'm very disappointed in you. You can't go running to some pretty boy's house just because you're-"
"He is not just some pretty boy."
"I expected better from you." Her voice was just as firm as mine was. "I did not raise you you to be the kind of girl who woudn't go home just so she can fool around with the next boy she sees."
"You were never even there to raise me!" I was filled with a sick sense of satisfaction upon seeing her flinch. "You hardly come home Mom, and when you do, you're too busy working to even look at me."
Her eyes hardened into tiny narrows slits. "That is not true. I have been working to make sure you get a good future. I raised you and you know that."
"Raising your child requires more that just leaving twenty dollars on the counter to make sure I don't starve for the day. Do you even have any idea what's going on with my life? You can't just decide to suddenly start acting like my mother-"
"I am your mother," she said. "I know I've been-"
Before she could finish what she was saying, her phone rang.
For the first time since we began to talk, she looked away from me to check her phone.
I inhaled sharply, daring her to pick it up and answer the phone call. I felt my heart drop to my stomach when she finally reached for it.
"This conversation isn't over," she said.
The bomb ticking inside of me exploded, flinging me away from this never-ending stream of fire and pain and suffering as bits of shrapnel dug into my skin; the impact served all ties that bounds us to each other.
"It it," i told her. "You already finished it."
I left before she could see me bleed.
