I was still surprised to find that my mom still left me money on the counter. I considered leaving it there, but it wasn't like I had money on me, so I took it then went to school.
Travis and I began to make our way to the cafeteria. I wasn't even going to try to get myself out of eating lunch with his buddies. Besides, Travis had been right when he figured eating together with his friends would get the rumors stirring even further. It was rare to see Travis with the same girl twice at all of a sudden, this absolute nobody was sharing a table with him and his friends on a daily basis.
"So you'll be free on Saturday?" He asked me.
"Why?"
"I don't know yet, but let's find out."
Garroth and Dante were in the middle school of another debate when
Travis and I got there. Everyone was engrossed in the discussion but as soon as Eclipse saw me, she immediately said, "You're going on Saturday right?"
"What's on Saturday?"
"It's a surprise," she replied. "But you'll love it."
"I hate surprises," I admitted.
"You hate everything," Travis interjected.
I narrowed my eyes at him. "I do not."
"You do," he said, speaking matter-of-factly.
Before I could say anything, Eclipse cut in. "I don't care if you have to drag (Your name) there with you, you better make sure she comes," she said to Travis. "Or I'm going to cut your balls."
"Your not making it easier for me to agree to come," I said
Everyone laughed, except for Seth.
As the conversation shifted into another debate, I felt myself fully relax, falling into their banter naturally. I silently thanked Travis for giving me the chance to join their group, when I did something but try to push away.
Then I made a promise to myself to stay away from them before it was too. I had a feeling our friendship wasn't going to last long
-
I was in the middle of watching YouTube video when my phone buzzed. It was Travis
T: Have you eaten?
I hadn't had a choice that it was already time for dinner
Y: Not yet.
Before I could even get back to what I was watching, he replied.
T: Good
Confused, I texted back and asked him why.
T: Because I'm already outside your house. Have dinner with me?
I nearly off of my chair in my haste to hurry to the window.
Sure enough, Travis was standing right outside, leaning against his car. I opened the window and leaned out.
"What ate you doing here?" I yelled.
"I was in the neighborhood," he said. "I didn't see your mom's car, so I figured you were probably moping around about not having anyone to eat dinner with."
"I wasn't," I lied "Were you in the neighborhood or were you just saying that?"
He snorted. "Don't flatter yourself, ( Your Surname). Mom asked me to do some errands."
When I didn't move, he lifted one shoulder in a slight shrug.
"So are you going to come down or do I have to climb up there and drag you?"
"I'll be there in a sec."
He grinned "Great"
As soon as I stepped outside, I had second thoughts.
Hesitantly, I walked over to him
"Come on," he said.
"Where are we going?"
"I was thinking we could eat at Parker's, but if there's somewhere else you'd like to go, that's fine, too."
Even as he opened the car door for me, I stayed rooted in place. "Why are you doing this?"
He smiled. "Eating alone is never fun."
When he got in, he turned on the stereo.
"Why were you in the neighborhood again?"
He pulled out the driverway. "Mom asked me to pick up some pictures from her co-worker."
After what he'd told me about his mother having an affair with Laurance's Dad, I wasn't sure how to react to this peace of information. I hadn't seen his mom yet, but I coudn't help but judge her before I enen had the chance to meet her.
Almost as if I read my mind, he said, "Somtimes I like to pretend that I don't know about the affair."
"Does she know that you knew about it?"
"Yeah." He swallowed. "She asked me not to tell him, saying she wanted to do it herself. I've always wanted to tell dad..."
Travis must have sensed the sudden change in my mood because he immediatley changed the topic,, turning to me with a too-bright smile. "Are you exited about Saturday?"
"I'm not sure," I replied honestly.
"You'll have fun. Trust me." He grinned at me. "Oh, and are you going to be free on friday? It's Eclipse's birthday. We're having a party."
"If she wanted me to come, I'm sure she would have invited me."
"It's a suprise," he said. "Balto's idea."
At this, I was reminded of the way Eclipse and Balto interacted. "Are Eclipse and Balto dating?"
He laughed a little, shaking his head. "They used to."
My thoughts came to an abrupt halt. "What?"
"They broke up a year ago."
"But...they're still freinds. That's impossible." I thought people coudn't stay friends after breaking up, but judging from the serious look on Travis's face, these two could.
"It's not," he replied. "They just moved on."
"No one can just forget about the past like that."
He shook his head, his browse creasing together as he lifted his gaze to mine. "Moving on isn't forgetting, (Your nickname)," he said.
"How can it not hurt?" I said defiantly.
He seemed to think about it for a while, the silence stretching then he said, "He looked away and shifted gears.
"But I'll be damned if I don't try to find out."
