Travis struck me as the kind of person who would always be late, but there was still a minute before the clock struck eight when the doorbell rang. I quickly flung the door open.
His face brightened the moment he saw me. "I was worried I had the wrong house."
"If you had't insisted on picking me up, you never would have had to worry about it at all," I said.
"But then I'd worry if you'd even show up at the party at all," he replied without missing a beat.
"Let's just go," I muttered walking past him to get to his car. The ride wasn't too awkward. I mostly looked out the window, partly so I woudn't have to look at him and partly to make sure that he wasn't trying to bring me somewhere else. He had a knack for ignoring my sarcastic retorts and gave clipped, monosyllabic responses. Even though I was having the time of his life. "You can at least pretend you're listening," he said.
I was listening, but I didn't tell him that. Instea, I told him that he was the one who subjected himself to this situation.
He ignored me and decided to open a new topic altogether.
"So how come I never noticed you until this year?"
I'd always known that I wasn't the kind of person that peaple noticed. I embraced it even, so I coudn't blame him for not knowing who I was, even though we've had four or five classes together since freshmen year.
"What? We've been classmates before?"
"Yes," I replied
Then, with a sudden burst of recognition, he said, "Hey, I do know you. You're Laurence Zvahl's girlfriend."
I flinched
"I was."
"That explains a lot."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
" I don't know , Y/S/N." He sent me a brief sideways glance before turning his eyes back on the road."You tell me."
The two of us stayed silent for the rest of the ride. As we were pulling up a few lots away from Garroth Ro'meave's house, I had a moment of hesitation. Memories of the party almost two weeks ago were flashing back in my head in sharp focus.
"Come on," Travis said, breaking the silence. He was back to his usual self before getting out of the car.
I followed suit.
The party was already on full swing by the time we strode into the house. A couple of peaple exchanged enthusiastic greetings with Travis as we made our way through the crowd.
"Is there anyone here who dosen't know you?" It almost took us fifteen minutes just to get to the dining room from the front door.
Travis handed me a plastic cup and motioned for me to put it under the keg's spout.
"Maybe they know of me," he said as I let him fill my cup halfaway. "But know me? Hardly."
"I bet all of them want to get to know you," I said as he began to fill up his cup.
He raised an eyebrow, then a faint smile appeared on his lips as he looked at me. "What abou to? Do you want to get to know me?"
"I think I got it fugured it out."
He looked genuinly curious. "This, I'm definitely i terested to hear."
"Travis Valkrum. Somehow, you were blessed to have both good looks and right friends to survive through high school. You pretty much know everyone in this house. And you never have trouble getting what you want."
He stated to protest, but I didn't let him.
"Undeniably charming, suprisingly witty, and irritatingly charismatic, girls often fall for you?"
His amused sime disappeard. "What do you mean by that?"
"I don't know Valkrum," I said with a shrug." You tell me." I started to walk toward the front door.
" You think you got it fugured it out, don't you?" He said as we began weave through the crowd.
"Fake smiles only go so far,Valkrum."
He stopped and looked at me. "And how would you k ow that they're fake?"
I could have sworn he was fighting back a smile, one that must have been real. I realized I didn't have an answer to his question.
"I just do."
"Is that so?"
I squared my shoulder. "Yes,Valkrum."
"Want to know what i think?" Without waiting for an answere, he took a step closer."You're hiding under a mask of your own."
I stepped back.
"Say what you will about me," he continued." But i can also see right through you."
There was little space between us. I scrambled backwards.
I felt like he succesfully unpeeled all the layers I'd been hiding underneath.
"Hey,watch out-"
But it was to late. I bumped into someone un my haste to get away from Travis. I quickly spun around to apologize, but the moment I saw who it was, the words were lost in my throat.
"Y/N?" He said just as suprised as I was. It was Laurance.
