On the drive home, we decided we would stay at my house to draw a sketch of me, and once he was done, I'd let him read one of my poems.
I fixed us some snacks before climbing up to my room.
He walked over to the bedside drawer and picked up a picture frame. He didn't say anything as he studied the photo. It was of me and Laurance last year's winter formal.
When Travis put it down and turned around, there was an unreadable expression on his face. He caught my gaze and nodded to my left. "What about that guitar?"
I looked over to my shoulder and see what he was referring to.
Half-obscured behind a coat hanger was an electric guitar snug in it's black case.
"Do you play?"
I avoided his gaze and swallowed, "No."
"And you have a guitar because..."
"I was supposed to give it to Laurance on his birthday," I swallowed again, struggling to keep my voice from cracking. "But then we broke up."
Laurance and I agreed to meet on the beach on his birthday.
I brought the guitar with me a gift I bought for months of saving up for it and waited for him. Wen he arrived, his lips didn't break into the crooked grin I'd learned to love. He didn't pull me into a hug or say my name the eay he used to. He wouldn't even look me in the eye, not until they say the words that broke my unexpected heart.
I forced the memory out of my thoughts as I raused my gaze to Travis's relentless stare.
Travis asked for a pen and some paper, then settled on a spot on the floor.
"Should I..." I paused, standing awkwardly in the middle of my room "Do I have to pose or..."
"Nah. Make yourself busy," he said. "Watch a movie or something. I prefer drawing candid portraits."
I sat on the floor, too, settling on a spot a few feet away from him but still directly his lind of sight. I propped up my laptop on my makeshift pillio table and watched (favorite movie), hoping it will distract me enough to keep me from being too concious while he stared.Curious, I peered at him. He was completely focused on the clipboard he grabbed from my study table, but every so often, he would brush his hair away from his eyes.
I didn't realize I was staring until he looked up."What?" he said.
I averted my gaze and said nothing. After thirty minutes, I realized it was impossible for me to relax. I could feel his scrutinizing eyes on me.
"If you could jusy stop looking like you're constipated,'' he suddenly said, "that would be great."I turned to glare at him.
"Yeah, looking like you want to kill me is souch better."
His eyes twinkled in amusement. "You really have a future on posing for portraits, (Your nickname)."
"This isn't comfortable," I muttered darkly.
"Just relax," he saidWith a sigh, he rose to his feet, setting the clipboard and pen on the floor. I wasn't sure what he was up to, and when he started to walk closer to me, I inched a little.
"What-what are you..."
Before I could figure out what I wanted to say, ge reached out to touch my face.I froze.
One hand rested behind my ear, as is to hold my head in place, and his other hand reached up to trace his thumb across the skin reached out to touch my face
"Let's get rid of that crease," he murmured. Then he moved his hand to the corner of my lips, his fingers leaving tingles when he let them trail across my skin. "And this frown."
My heart started to pound so loud, I could hear it in my ears.
But my jaw loosened, entranced by the lightness of his touch.
He was leaning away and when I looked up on him, he was smiling.
"There we go," he said before ambling back to his spot
I watched the rest of the movie in a daze.
His touch burned my skin.
