I hugged my laptop to my chest, making my way through the halls to go to the parking lot
"Y/S/N!"
I turned to look.
Travis was half-running toward me, but he slowed down when he eas close enough. "Heading out?"
"I'm going to have lunch" I replied.
"Have lunch with me," he suggested.
I shook my head, already turning away to leave. "We've gone through this, Valkrum."
"Yes, but-" He stopped in front to block my way. "My friends want to meet you."
My eyebrows shot up my forehead. "What?"
"Eat with us." He replied.
It's been four days since we talked about our plan. The following day after our little talke, I came to homeroom to find box of chocolates on my desk. Travis made a show of asking me if I liked them, making sure everyone knew they were from him. More gifts were left on my desk in the next few days.
I coudn't bring myself to trust him completely. He was too willing, too eager, and that was enough for me to suspect that something wasn't right. I had to draw the line somewhere, and accepting his invitation to eat lunch with him and his friends would definitely be crossing that line.
"Look," he said, keeping his tone rational. "They just want to meet you. We're not usually so secretive around each other. One of them already threatend to cuty balls off if i don't introduce you."
"All the more reason why I should say no then," I pointed out.
He laughed then shook his head. "Come on. It's just lunch, not a firing squad."
I promptly turned to the direction of the cafeteria and began to walk.
Travis fell into step with me." You know what, you look down."
My head snapped to look at him. "What's that supposed to mean?"
He shrugged. "Nothing. You always look upset."
"I don't."
"You scowl, you frown you rely too much on sarcasm," he said in rapid succession. "You never smile."
"That's not true," I said. "And none of those mean that I'm upset or whatever."
"Well, whatever you are, it's not happy."
I almost missed a step. I was throughly taken aback by his words as well frankness.
"You may smile and laugh and joke around, but you're not happy either," I said.
He turned to look me directly in the eye. "I never said I was."
That shut me up. He seemed like he was hardly bothered by it, and for a second I was envious-envious that he could say it straight out without worrying about what I might think of him.
It had been a whule since I last had lunch at the Cafeteria. Students were milling around the tables and several conversations overlapped one another. There was a constant chatter filling the air.
My thoughts came to an abrupt halt when my eyes caught Lucinda sitting alone at our usual table, scribbling furiously on a notebook.
Then my eyes fell on Laurance's table. Even from where I was, I could almost pick out Laurance's laughter from the noise as I threw a crumple tissue paper at one of his friends.
I felt Travis tug me, pulling me out of my thoughts as he dragged me to stand in line.
"You really need to work on that," he said without looking at me
"On what?"
"Every time you see him." He grabbed a tray for both of us and handed me one as he looked me in the eye. "You get that expression on your face that maked it so obvious you're desperate to be with him."
i inhaled sharply." I don't want to be with him."
"Then you better stop looking at him like he's a gift from heaven," he snapped.
"I hate him, okay?" I sad firmly, making sure we were looking eye to eye so he knew that i meant it.
"Then stop feeling sorry for yourself." He shook his head once again, his voice had groen soft. "It's not your loss, Y/S/N. You need to tell yourself that it's not your loss."
"You have no right to tell me how I should feel when you don't even know me."
"I say it's time to fix that."
"Hey, you!"
I snuck a glance at Travis before turning back to the Black haired guy pointing a finger at me, looking like whatever he was bout to say next was a matter utmost importance. "How do you like you like your pasta? Whith red sause or white sauce?"
"Um...White?"
Half the peaple seated around the table clapped, but the black haired boy slumped back in his seat.
Travis set his tray on the table and placed a hand on the small of my back to nudge forward.
"Everyone, I'd luke you to meet Y/N."
I expected them to be high-strung or snobbish, but all six faces look looked friendly, thrilled, even though Pasta Boy (Zane) seemed to harbor bitterness towrd me.
"Hi," the girl with black qnd red highlights said, gesturing to the seat next to her.
"It's great to finally meet you. I'm Eclipse."
I took the seat she offered, putting my tray down on the table.
Travis sat next to me." So I'm guessing white sauce is winning?"
"No thanks to her," Pasta boy grumbled from the other end of the table.
"If Y/N likes white, I'm going to go with that, too."
"You don't even like pasta," The blue haired girl replied.
I still wasn't sure what this was all about, but it seemed like an inside joke, and asking about it would probably just remind them that I was an outsider.
As soon as everyone finished telling me their names, Travis turned to talk to me. "We usually have informal debates over the most trival things."
Curious, I raised an Eyebrow "Debates?"
"Like the one Zane had just dragged you into," he replied.
"You were supposed to say something to justify your your choice," Eclipse said," But we can let it slide for now."
"You're just saying that because she's on your side," Zane muttered under his breath.
"Speaking of Italian food, why don't we grab some pasta tomorrow?" Said the guy who introduced himself as Vylad.
I chose to keep quiet as the others answered yes.
Travis turned to look at me. "You free tomorrow?"
I knew I wasn't one of them, so even though I was free, I said,
"Im not sure."
Travis wanted to say something, but before he could, Eclipse said, "You have to come."
"Of course, she will," Lala, the sister of Kyla, said. "This is, like, a welcoming dinner for her."
Everybody was waiting for my reply. I insitictively cleared my throught "Do you-uh-do you do this with all of Travis's other girls?"
"Sweetheart, you're the first one he bothered to introduce tous," Dante said.
I spent the rest of the luch period with them. I didn't talk much, but they made attempts to include me in the conversation and none of them felt forced. There were times when they'd bring up an inside joke, and I would remember that I didn't belong, but it was better than eating alone outside the campus
"Oh, there was this time whe i drove my mom to the conveniece store," Dante said after we were all done eating." She was buying something Then-"
"Please don't," Travis said
"Guess who happened to be buying condoms at that moment?" Dante continued
Travis let out a groan. "Go to hell."
"Seriously?" I turned to Travis for confitmation.
He looked genuinly embarrased, do even though he hadn't say yes, I already knew it was true.
The funny thing is that my mom think Travis's an Angel," Dante added. " imagined her suprise when he saw him paying for condoms."
"At least she knows you're not getting anyone pregnant," I offered, looking at Travis.
Travis gave me a withering stare.
When lunch ended and everyone else left, Travis offered to walk me to my class.
"That's not necessary," I told him.
"Im supposed to be trying to impress you."
"I can just talk to Dante's mom to get her impression of you."
He winced at the reference nbut didn't say anything as he led me the corridor.
"Is it true you never introduce anyone to them?"
A flash of guilt flickered across his face. "There was jusy no point." Then, more quietly, he said, "I've never planned them around long enough to consider introducing them to my friends."
"And you wonded why I don't like you," I said. I didn't mean for the words to come out as sharply as they did. I was immediately filled with guilt
"For the record,"he said," I see the reasons myself."
