The man gave me a hard look and turned his horse to face mine. I did the same thing with Mordecai. The horses began nipping each other's necks before the man's horse began pushing Mordecai back.
"Good boy, Levi," the man grinned.
Levi was a white horse spotted with brown. He had deep, black eyes that seemed to stare into your soul. He had to be a middle-aged horse about twenty hands tall. Only four taller than Mordecai.
I had seen Levi around camp and would typically steer clear of that one. He was one that had a bad temper and would attack anyone who came too close to him in the stables. I always made it a point not to even step foot in the stables, just so I could survive.
Levi pushed Mordecai out of the formation, snapping at his neck. I tried steering Mordecai around him to get him back in formation, but Levi would not let him pass. I groaned, looking to the others for assistance. No one seemed to realise what was going on.
"Aye, Jefferson! Back in formation!" Kai yelled out, even though he is half the man's age.
The man, Jefferson, grumbled before going back to where he was supposed to be, allowing me to do the same. I gave Kai a quick smile of gratitude before looking ahead of the group again.
A few hours later, we were taking a break so the horses could rest. Seeing as we were the youngest on the mission, Kai and I sat together, just having a small conversation.
"Who is the guy riding Levi anyway?" I questioned.
"Alexander Jefferson. He is completely obnoxious. I really do not understand his problem. However, I can see why he treated you the way he did. He hates anyone who associates themselves with Apple. Plus, your attitude did not help your case at all. Being like Apple can be a good thing, and a bad thing. If you want to live to see your next birthday, I suggest holding your tongue when around Jefferson. I would hate to see you die right before retrieving Apple."
"I do not appreciate your sarcasm, Cox."
"I do not understand what you mean. Sarcasm? I am not being sarcastic."
"You dislike me, so why would you care if I were killed by Jefferson?"
"To say I dislike you us a bit of false information, you know. It would be quite hypocritical of me to dislike you and like Apple, would it not?"
"Ginger and the others dislike me," I pointed out.
He sighed, "Listen, Calnan. To the majourity of Apple's friends, you are viewed as a threat. Think about us, we only see her at meals and in passing, if that. The few months leading up to her latest mission, she abandoned us at meals and ate with only you. Therefore, they all began to see you as someone who was taking their leader away. She always has been the leader of our little group. With her training you, she has become closer to you than she has been to us."
"I never saw it that way. I apologise."
"You have no reason to apologise, just remember why we say we hate or dislike you next time it is said."
I nodded and Kai stood up, "Where are you going?"
"Drink. Want something?"
I nodded and he walked off toward the area food and drink had been set up in. He opened his pack and grabbed a thing of red wine and two glasses, bringing it back over to where we set up our mini camp.
He sat down across from me, handing one of the glasses over. I took it, holding it out for him to fill it. Once he opened the bottle, he poured some in my cup and then his own.
