"We're almost there", our instructor panted as we treked to the top.

The past couple of days had been bliss. India had so much to offer and show. It was unlike any country I had seen (although I hadn't been to many). We were a team of ten working on the assignment - photographing, making notes, living. Greeted by the traffic of Manali followed by the food was a great start to the massive climb.

The pressure could be felt at every step we took with the snow chilling our blood. Great views of the Everest, wonderful quaint tea houses to stay in, hospitality and almost continuous views of some of the tallest peaks in the world kept my attention for what was typically an eleven day trek.

The trail ended at Everest Base Camp. An animal or two were spotted often followed by squeals and hurried
"click-click's". The Base Camp had quite a few surprises in store for us. A fire merrily crackled at a distance as the flame burnt at a welcoming yellow. Setting up tents became quite a task as I had to move my limbs when all I wanted to do was warm myself near the fire. However, the mountains made me forget about home or well... everyone I think was home at least.

The days passed swiftly the weather inching to extremities everyday. I had lost track of the days. Maybe Christmas was over already. Nobody here celebrated it... Nobody I could ask. Everyday was the same: the mountains glittering in magical white snow. Cold yet beautiful.

"What day is it ?", I asked Meg, one of my correspondent,  as we huddled close to the fire

"What day is it ?", I asked Meg, one of my correspondent,  as we huddled close to the fire. The sun had long disappeared behind the mountains taking its fiery glow with it.

"I dunno", she whispered as James pulled her close. I looked away pointedly. Well... At least some people had their love stories going, I thought as I shifted awkwardly in my place. I couldn't feel my nose when I sniffed.
Oh yes .... The mountains had been great. But I wanted to go home.

Suddenly, at a distance, fireworks erupted in the sky. The starry night was soon filled with beautiful colors. That's when lonliness hit me full force. I knew what day it was....

"Reyna?", I could hear Meg calling,"I think it's New Years", glee evident in her voice. I turned to give her a watery smile when I realized she wasn't even looking at me anymore. It was indeed New Years and a small horrible thought crept up into my mind.

Maybe... Just maybe.. I should have stayed back home.
