~ 1 and a half months later ~"The Philadelphia 76ers choose...Ben Simmons! Graduate of Louisiana State University!"
I took a deep breath as I sat next to Deshawn. I had his hand in my grip tightly. I was more nervous than he was. Brooklyn sat to my right and patted me on my back. I looked at her as she gave me a reassuring smile. Across the table from me was Rakeem. He flashed me a smile also and I gave one back. Beside Deshawn sat his mother Denise, his sister Destiny, and Taj aka T-Rock. His mother held his other hand as she swayed in her seat. Everyone was dressed elegantly in their best tux and suits and ball dresses. The room was full of future promising basketball stars like D. All of them were experiencing the opportunity of a lifetime. Playing the game of their heart.
"Are you as scared as I am?" I whispered in his ear. Deshawn paused and licked his lips," I'm not sure. I don't feel anything right now."
"Babe?" I asked causing him to raise a eyebrow at me. "What ma?" He replied softly. He looked as if his body was here but his mind was else where. "You're going to get this. Get what you always wanted."
D cracked a small smile,"I know. But if I don't...I've got something else I never knew I needed." I blushed,"and I've got something I always wanted." D leaned over and kissed my forehead."For the fourth pick of the night," the host of the NBA Draft, Commisioner Silver, continued," The Chicago Bulls." The audience clapped as the head coach came on stage with a folded jersey. "They choose..."
My heart began to beat faster in my chest as I held D's hand. I could tell that now he was growing nervous because his palms were sweating. Everyone at the table simultaneously put their heads down as if saying a small prayer that this was the moment of glory.
"Deshawn Harris Jr.! Graduate of Chicago State University!"
Deshawn was in complete awe as he seemed to have been glued to his seat. "That my dawg!" Taj clapped proudly. His voice cracked a little as he cheered. "My hitta!" Rakeem added slapping D on the shoulder. "Oh my God! That's you! That's my brother!" Destiny squealed as she hugged him tightly. Brooklyn stood up as well and clapped," Yay Deshawn." His mom was crying like a baby," Aww my baby. I'm so proud." She croaked through the tears. Deshawn stood up to turn and look at me. A few tears trickled from my eyes because I was overjoyed for him. D bit down on the corner of his mouth. He slowly wrapped me up in an embrace. I felt his heart beating just as fast as mine. I realeased myself from his grip and pushed him so he could go towards the stage. "You go boy!" I laughed as I cheered. The coach unraveled the jersey to reveal his name Harris, Jr. on the back along with the number 25. He was going to be able to keep the same number he had in college.
Deshawn walked across the stage and shook Mr. Silver and Head Coach Fred Hoiberg's hand. Coach handed him over the jersey and gave him a welcoming hug as if saying welcome to the Bulls family. The family that created and was home to legends like: Michael Jordan. Scotty Pippen. Dennis Rodman. Derrick Rose."Welcome to the NBA."
