It's been a while since you've played Mario Kart yet you happen to be in first place. You know how Dan gets when he loses but his constant yelling is like music to your ears.
The level comes to an end and you finish in first with Dan in second."Suck it!" You yell in his face.
He rolls his eyes in response and scoots his back closer to his all too familiar sofa crease.
"I'm picking the next level." He states. You grin at how cranky he's being and watch him scroll through the different maps. He stops on the rainbow one which is your least favorite. You were going to protest but he'd already pressed play.
You decide your character would be Luigi and Dan's, Mario. So generic. You start off in first place but then Dan throws a lighting bolt at you and you end up in fourth place.
"You little cunt!" You slap his arm.
Your competitive side is coming in to play but Dan only laughs at you. Eventually you catch up to him and now the pressure is on.
In the middle of the game, Dan shifts his position so that his legs are crossed on the sofa and you notice that your legs are now touching.
You can't help but feel goosebumps crawl down your neck and spine. Why does he do this to you? And why don't you try to stop it?
In the midst of your thinking, you end up in third somehow and Dan has a giant lead. As much as you want to beat him again, something about his fabric touching your bare leg is so hypnotizing.
You've been friends for over 2 years and you still haven't told him how you feel. Sooner or later he's going to get a girlfriend and you're going to regret not saying anything. You plan on telling him somehow. Eventually.
As the game comes to a wrap, Dan gloating at his win, you set the controller down and turn to him.
"Dan?" He finishes up a laugh and then looks you in the eyes.
"What's up?" He says, casually throwing his arms back along the top of the sofa. You have to think of something quick. Something witty. Something Dan would say if he were trying to discretely tell you something.
"This just came to mind for some reason, but when was the last time you had a girlfriend?"
His eyebrows raise in surprise at the random question you just threw at him. He leans forward, placing his elbows on his knees.
"Gosh, um..I think maybe when I was in university? I don't really remember. Why?"
You fight back a smile.
"Well, I was talking with someone, who I discovered was a huge fan of yours, and she was asking all these questions about you that I didn't even know. So I'd thought I'd freshen up on my Dan Howell facts."
He nods his head, dimples peeking through. "What were some of the questions?" He sits back again. You can't help but feel as if there were some sort of connection going on here.
"Well, she wanted to know if you'd ever consider dating a fan. Or maybe a close friend."
He's got to know now, come on Dan see the big picture.
He rubs the bottom of his chin with his thumb and fore finger, contemplating over what you said.
"I mean, why not? People are people. And if I really like them then I wouldn't hesitate to say something."
You nod your head approvingly.
As you think about it, you begin to feel a wave of sadness about how you've never had a proper boyfriend before. Just flings and one night stands. Dan probably has had a lot of experience so why would he ever be with someone like you?
"You okay?" He asks.
At some point you had shifted your eyes to the carpet and stopped talking.
"Yeah, it's just... I've never really been in an actual relationship before. One that means something. No one ever seems to notice me and it kind of sucks."
Suddenly you feel his warm hand on top of yours. You look up in surprise to see him sitting dangerously close to you. Instead of just a knee, his whole side is parallel to yours.
You try to control yourself so he wouldn't feel your heart racing, but it's no use. "I think you're forgetting about me. I notice you."
You shake your head. "Thank you, but that's not what I meant." His hand refuses to let go of yours to which you're thankful for.
"Then explain."
You think about what you want to tell him. Putting together words and sentences in your head is a lot more difficult with him staring at you. But then you come to the conclusion that you'd tell him the truth.
"Dan, I fancy you. I hadn't said anything because I'm afraid that you'll be scared of me and not feel the same. I mean, we're practically best friends so I shouldn't be afraid to say something so simple to you but I am. And I didn't know if this would affect the way you see me, like maybe you'd start avoiding me because you know how I feel and don't want to be rude about not feeling the same. I just.."
Without warning, Dan's hand reaches up and cups your face. Your words are cut off my his lips and you've never been so relieved and so in love in your entire life.
After a few seconds, you pull apart and look into each other's eyes. "I'm glad one of us finally said something." He smirks.
