13.
"She came to my house and slept in my guest room. We didn't even fuck, so why do you care?" Zayn was shrugging the entire situation off the next day at lunch. Meanwhile, I was ready to throw whatever object was passed as my lunch to me in his face. And by the looks of Perrie's face, she would've helped.
"Why didn't you tell me you had a girl over?" She said through a gritted smile. Blinking rapidly, she looked as if something was in her eye.
"Pez, it was no big deal. We just like, chilled out. It was cool. Just cool."
Perrie's blue eyes were firing daggers, but before she could hound Zayn, I still had a bit more questions.
"So she's at your house now?"
Zayn's face twisted into something that resembled confusion and worry.
"She left before I woke up. It was like she wasn't even there."
My stomach dropped.
"Why do you care so much, anyway? It's not like she gives a fuck about you." That question was something I'd been battling for a while, but I was not going to give Zayn the satisfaction of knowing that I didn't have an answer.
"You could have at least let her mom know she was with you-she has a right to know."
Zayn tiredly rolled his eyes.
"How dumb do I look? I'm second in the class, remember? I let her dad know right after she came, at around one-thirty."
My heart nearly exploded while Zayn continued.
"He sounded really drunk and pissed off though. And guessing by the language he was using to describe his daughter, can you say 'daddy issue complex'?" He chuckled to himself while I made no effort to contain myself anymore.
"WHY WOULD YOU TALK TO HER FATHER?!" I boomed. The entire lunch room grew quiet, and I could feel stares from everyone, including our friends, but I didn't care. Zayn could've put Leila in much more danger than she was before. His eyebrows merely rose.
"He was the one who picked up first. Jesus, Styles, calm down."
"Yeah, what's gotten into you?" Louis added.
"He's been through a lot, lay off." Liam chime in. I could barely hear them though. I've had the displeasure of seeing the things Leila's father has done when he's drunk. And it's nothing nice.
*flashback*
"I love walking you home, y'know that?" I picked off a leaf from a nearby tree and fiddled with it. Fall was leaving, winter approaching. The bitter cold seconded that notion.
"Why?" She giggled. She squeezed her hand as it was in mine. I always loved that.
"Does everything have to have a reason?"
"No, but everything happens for a reason." I considered this as we approached her driveway, a bed of leaves stacked up next to the mailbox.
"Your leaves remind me of a taco." I said, not really thinking.
"Why are you always thinking of food?" She tried her best to sound annoyed but her smile said otherwise.
"Don't worry, I like you more than tacos. Way more." I felt my crooked smile creep up.
"Well, I'm flattered. She twirled up her driveway humming "Shake It Out" by Florence + The Machine.
"So is that our song now?" I asked, coming up behind her and hugging her waist.
"Why should we have a tune written by someone else, for someone else to describe how we feel about each other?" She questioned, placing her hands on top of mine. I kissed her cheek.
"You want to know too much."
"LEILA!!" We both turned around. We saw her father standing in the doorway, bottle of whiskey in his hand.
"What the heller you doing with your arms around my daughter's waist like that, boy?" The sun was setting, almost apologetically, sorry that it couldn't help but only watch.
"I apologize, sir, I didn't mean to--"
"Just shut up and don't let it happen again. And you."
He turned to Leila.
"Dad.."
"Get inside."
"Please."
"Bitch..." He began, raising his hand. She flinched at that notion. She ran inside and he walked to me. I trembled.
"I don't ever want to see your hands holding her again." He breathed.
"Okay."
"You say 'yes, sir!'" I felt a sting on my cheek and looked in horror. This man wasn't afraid to strike someone he barely knew--what could he do to his family?
From the shrieks I heard from the inside as I walked away, I already knew.
*end of flashback*
I needed to find Leila, quickly. Before her dad did. If he got his hands on her on a bad night, I might not ever see her again. And my mind has already shown that I can't be without her.
"Okay, well, we're gonna have a session after school. Are you gonna quit this slump and have fun for once?" Louis sounded bored and forced to invite me.
"I have to do my homework."
"For god's sake, Harry, after that then!" He was really aggravated, so I hastily agreed. Everyone at the table looked surprised, for I had not gone out in ages.
"All right...well, see you there then." Said Liam, trying not to make things awkward.
Maybe I needed to take my mind off of Leila for a bit. Maybe she was fine.
--
I was pretty fucked up. I was high and drunk, at the same damn time. And I loved the feeling. I missed the feeling. I couldn't get enough of the feeling. I was feeling free for the first time in a month and my friends loved it.
"I LOVE PARTY HARRY!!" Louis screamed to the sky. I matched his yell and suddenly my shirt was off. My friends were dancing and having a good time, just like always.
"YOU DONT NEED A GIRL, HARRY!" Liam shrieked.
The last thing I remember the moment before Jesy found her is screaming
"Fuck yeah, I don't need her!"
Because there at our campsite, I didn't. I didn't need Leila because I had my other friends with me. Who were there when she wasn't. And yet, that's exactly where she happened to be.
Jesy shrieked from the far left of the camp, near the pier. We barely noticed, being so destroyed. And then she appeared there. In nothing but a familiar black shirt and the same sweatpants from two days ago, she sat leaning on the wood docks. I almost thought it was a ghost, a hallucination. But then she turned around, flashing that angelic face of hers. She loftily smiled, then turned back to the water. Time had stopped.
My Leila.
So yeah, she didn't leave for long! Short but impactful chapter, huh? (: update this weekend (: XO
