Lindy didn't feel like being scared.
She also didn't feel like being in the car.
She didn't feel like being hungry.
She didn't feel like listening to Your Lazy Heart—a song her mom played over and over and over and over.
When Lindy felt like doing something, that is the only thing she did. She learned in her long life of eleven years that if she was going to do something, she might as well feel like doing it. If she wasn't in the mood to do something she was going to magically change it into something she did like to do.
What she felt like doing now was fighting!
"Why do we have to have a lot of old boring stuff always?" Lindy shouted over Your Lazy Heart.
"It's important to be thrifty," her mom answered.
Lindy frowned. Many things were supposed to be "important" but were in fact very unimportant to Lindy. "We have cell phones! Hello! Welcome to this century!"
"Which century is that?" her mom asked.
Lindy didn't know. This made her more in the mood to fight.
Speaking of important things, it was very important that her mother matched her mood because it pleased Lindy when they were together on things.
Sometimes they both were in a lazy mood and they sat on the couch watching movies for hours on end. Sometimes they were both in a crazy mood and they would run around the house screaming. Sometimes, if Lindy was lucky, her mom liked to be in the mood to argue.
"I mean, we aren't going to use this dumb thing, are we?" Lindy gagged.
"It's called a rotary phone and I bought it because its really cute and we are going to use it as a decoration," said her mother briskly, and not at all annoyed.
Lindy frowned. She thought it would make a cute decoration in the same way a garbage bag would.
"Not as a phone?"
"No, you need to plug it in the wall and have a home line for that," Mom said.
"Dumb."
"Well, you don't have to like it!" Her mom went on humming.
Lindy sighed heavily. "But what's the point?"
Her mom's smile faded and she repeated. "It's for decoration!"
"But its super ugly!"
Now her mom was getting really annoyed. This was good.
When her mom got angry, interesting things happened!
