Her mom got that edge to her voice. "It's nostalgic."
There was a moment where Lindy didn't say anything. She didn't mind keeping a silence for a moment. It allowed her mom to build up some real steam.
Her mother was silent too. Your Lazy Heart ended and she pressed the back button so it would play again.
For the fourth time.
Good move, Mom. Lindy thought. But she had some great weapons up her sleeve too.
She made her very high and whiny. "I can't believe you are so old you used to use this!"
Lindy's mother, who was thirty-two, snapped at her daughter. "You know, you will never understand! You'll never experience dialing a number with the rotary dial. All the anticipation, the spinning sound it makes. You will never know about the hang-up button, or pulling the chord out of the wall and cutting off someone's conversation. You will never know what its like to pick up the phone without having any idea who is calling. And then the sound of it ringing! You could hear it all over the house. There are real bells inside that thing!"
Lindy huffed and snorted. She liked making snorting noises. It really made people mad. "Real bells? Wow. That's amazing!"
Her mom gripped the steering wheel a bit harder.
Now she was as mad as Lindy liked her to be.
That goal accomplished, Lindy was suddenly no longer in the mood to fight. She sighed. She was more in the mood for some food. "Can we get McDonald's?" she asked.
Her mom said nothing.
Lindy sighed harder.
Your Lazy Heart played on.
Suddenly, riiiiiiiing!
Lindy looked down at her lap.
Riiiiiiiing!
