The ring was so loud, Lindy threw her hands over her ears. She looked down at the phone her lap.
"Mom?"
"If you aren't going to speak respectfully, then I am not going to speak to you!" her mom said.
Riiiiing!
"But, Mom, your phone is ringing."
Lindy's mom picked up her cell phone and checked it.
"No, your old phone."
Riiiiing!
"Look, I don't care if you don't like the phone. When you get your own house some day you can fill it with all sorts of modern spacy-agey things and then I can come judge your decorating style."
Riiiiing!
Lindy didn't really feel like arguing anymore. She felt like silencing that sound!
She picked up the receiver. "Hello?"
Her mother looked back and said, "I told you we will be home in five minutes!"
But Lindy listened to the voice on the other side of the line.
"Patricia?" the voice said.
Lindy was silent because she wasn't sure how to respond.
"Um . . ."
"Is this Pat?" the person on the telephone said.
"No."
"Did I dial 481-522-5538?"
"Um, I don't know."
"What do you know?"
"Is this a joke?" Lindy asked.
"What?" her mom said.
"Nothing!" Lindy said.
Lindy's mom turned up the radio. This was the universal sign of "You are annoying me and we aren't talking."
Lindy leaned in to whisper into the phone. "Um, this isn't Patricia, this is Lindy. How are you calling me on this phone? Its not connected to the wall."
There was a pause on the other line. "What is that music?"
"Your Lazy Heart," said Lindy. "By Lu Lu Lee."
There was a long pause.
"How did you get that song?" said the voice.
"Radio!" Lindy yelled over the radio.
"But—but that song hasn't been out since—? I don't remember. How did you get that song to play?
Lindy shrugged. "I annoyed my mom."
"No, but how did you get that song back?"
"Back from where?"
The person on the other line breathed very hard now. "Please stay on the line, this is incredibly serious!"
