"Hello, Lindy," said the woman. "Forty years ago to this day--the day you are living in now--something very strange happened. They call it the 'bridge to futurepast.' No one knows how it came about, we only know that we have been living the consequences of future past for four decades, and it has been terrible. People have died."
"Are you playing on that phone again?" Lindy's mom came in the room. She picked up the receiver and hung it up. "Get your homework and chores done!"
"But moooom! They were about to tell me about people dying!"
"Don't be morbid!"
"I'm not being morbid! I am not even in the mood to be morbid!" Lindy stomped her feet.
"What have I told you about pudding on the couch?"
Lindy bowed her head. "I was careful."
Her mom grabbed her arm. A big glob of pudding trickled the length of it.
"Are you going to clean up this mess?" said her mom. "Of course you aren't. You don't feel like it."
"I might feel like it later."
Her mother became very red. "Your room!"
Lindy licked the pudding trickle off her arm and stomped down to her room because she felt like stomping. She was supposed to do her laundry. She took everything out of the hamper and shoved it under her bed, covering it with stuffed animals. She threw her blanket over her bed without using the sheet. She threw everything else in the closet. Then she went upstairs to get her iPad and math homework.
The old phone was ringing again.
Lindy picked it up. "My mom is going to be really mad if she sees me using this."
"Lindy!" It was the General. "We have patched the phone through to yourself in the futurepast. You are going to talk to the 56 year old Lindy now!"
