Lindy wasn't all that interested in their story but she went to this CNN.com anyway and started reading the current article, which was something about houses and money something something. She was very bored by the second sentence, but she sounded out the big words and listened as each of the people on the other end ohhed and ahhhed.

"Okay, now tell me the story, then I gotta hang up."

"Lindy," said a new voice. This was the voice of an old man. "This is The Commanding General of the United States Army. My name is Lance Abrams. What you have showed us is very impressive so far. I think its very important that you tell us the exact date and time of this call. Look on your iPad."

"Where's my story?"

"Please, Lindy, this is causing quite a stir."

Lindy sighed and looked at the iPad. "May fourth, 7:10 p.m."

"That is remarkable. Just remarkable."

More murmurings.

"Tell me my story or I hang up."

"Lindy," The General continued. "We are from your future past. Do you know about the futurepast--well of course you don't! Its about to happen, isn't it?"

"I don't know," said Lindy. She was rummaging through the cupboards for some snacks. It had been fifteen minutes since dinner and she was starving.

"You are only one day away from the beginning of futurepast. According to our best scientists, who are on the phone with us as we speak, you are mere hours away from the beginning."

"Ohhh kaaaay--"

"This is the most significant thing that has happened in the past thirty years. First, you have to tell me how you are speaking to us."

She sighed. Hadn't she already covered this? "Um, mom bought an ugly phone from a thrift store and you called on it."

"How old is this phone, by chance?"

"I don't know, it has a round dial thingie."

"A rotary phone!" shouted the General. "She's calling on a rotary phone!"

"I think you called me," Lindy said.

"Very mysterious!" shouted the General.

"I have to do some math homework . . . "

"Wait! Don't hang up! The fate of the world--"

Lindy hung up. She didn't really feel like worrying about the fate of anything. She looked up her math problems quickly and got another snack from the fridge--pudding this time.

She was just sitting down on the couch with her math problems in her hand when the phone rang again.

She didn't feel like picking it up. Instead, she slurped her pudding.
