I hugged Nilla so grateful that she had come to pick me up.

“It’s been too long.” she said, as she pulled away. “What are you doing over here anyways?” she asked as she led me to her small Honda.

“Um I was supposed to meet a friend, but they didn’t show.” I said shrugging my shoulders and feeling terrible for lying to her, but she would think I was crazy.

She drove and the silence was quiet interrupted by my stupid stomach’s growl.

“How long has it been since you last ate?” she asked in a motherly way.

“Um I don’t remember” I said sheepishly.

“Well then it’s been too long I’m going to take you to eat. I know your mom’s death was hard on you, but that is no reason to starve yourself.” she scolded.

I felt warm tears flow down my cheeks. “I’m sorry.” I said as she slowed to a stop. She hugged me again. I heard my phone buzz and I looked at the screen it was Jarred. “You gonna answer that, it could be your friend” she suggested.

“Hey” I said cheerfully as she led us into Jack in the Box. She went to order and left me at the table for privacy.

“I told you not to do anything stupid” he scolded. “Where are you?”

“I’m sorry, everything is too much for me. I can't right now. Please leave me alone, don’t come find me. I need space.” I said in a rush before Nilla came back.

“That’s why I’m here, I’m your mate remember? Space! What! We’re supposed to be together-” I hung up because he was yelling and I didn't want Nilla to get suspicoius.

“Was that your friend?” she asked handing me a coke and a burger. "No it was the wrong number." I said as I started to eat and I realized I was starving. My phone buzzed again. I looked at the screen and it was Jarred again.

I ignored it. It kept buzzing, but I wasn’t going to answer it. I finished eating and it felt so good to have something in my stomach. “I’m taking you home okay sweety.” she said after our meal. I nodded.

She drove me home saying that if I ever needed anything to just call her. I felt a rush of sadness and joy as my house came into view. She dropped me off and I ran into it.

The door was open. “Hello?” I called, but there was no answer. I felt a rush of excitement for some reason, and then I heard a low growl. I froze. I turned slowly and saw Jarred standing there looking super angry.

“You shouldn’t have hung up on me” he said angrily. “And you shouldn’t have run away. You need my help to save your life. And I'm your mate” he stated as he came toward me. I took an involuntary step back.

“I’m sorry this is too much for me, I need space, a lot of it. I don’t want to die, become a vampire or a werewolf.” I said tears flowing down my cheeks.

“I’m sorry for being such a douche and not being more understanding.” he said as he wrapped his arms around me. I hugged him back tightly. Maybe having a mate wasn’t so bad at least there was someone who cared about me although maybe he only did it because we were mates. Either way it was nice knowing you had someone, who couldn't due as easily as any other person.

“Do you want to eat something?” he asked.

“I already ate.” I stated. He nodded in approval.

“Since you already ate let’s go catch a movie” he said.

I shook my head. “Why not?”

“Because it’s too normal, and it’s weird. Can we just chill or something?” I asked.
