Three Months Later

I waited by the kitchen table, my mood souring with each minute passing. Bruce and Dick said they would be back for my birthday. Seems that was a lie.

I waited in the kitchen with Alfred and heard the clock chime in the background.

"I'm sure they will be back Master Perseus." The all faithful butler said.

Sighing I pushed away the birthday cake that Alfred had made, "I'm going to bed Alfred." I said with another sigh and stood up.

"At least make your wish." Alfred said with this pained expression. I wanted to uplift his feelings but I felt empty, at the moment anyway.

"What's the point?" I asked with a shrug, "it's not like it's going to come true." I looked toward the front door and let out another sigh, "Goodnight Alfred, and thanks anyway for the cake. I'll eat some tomorrow, not that hungry." I said and excused myself and started toward my bedroom.

Bruce promised he would be here but why am I so surprised that he's not, it's not like he ever made my basketball games that I was captain of.

Dick can be excused, I know he at least tried his best and he made a lot of my games, but he was busy and always disappearing off with Bruce.

It hurt really, Dick was going to turn twelve in a month give or take a few days and part of me just wanted to give him what it felt like to be alone on your birthday, but I'm not like that and I'll be the good cousin and get him a gift.

Sighing almost seemed like a second skin as I did it again as I closed my bedroom door. I couldn't believe I was ten, but as I laid on my bed sleep seemed to just not come.

Looking at the clock I saw it was 1 AM and slowly made my way out of my bedroom, maybe Alfred could make some hot cocoa and tell me one of the many stories he seems to know.

I was just about to round the corner when I heard Alfred chewing Bruce out, "You promised him." it shocked me a moment to hear that it was the normally calm voice of Alfred that shouted

"I know I promised him, but Joker had gotten out and I had to chance him throughout Gotham." Bruce's voice said and I heard that he was angry, but what didn't make sense was the words he said.

Frowning I melted into the shadows (which really wasn't that hard) and listened more, "Dick, why don't you go to bed, it seems Bruce and I need to have a chat and you have an Algebra test in the morning. " Alfred said and I could practically tell that he just wanted to be alone with Bruce.

"Ok Alfred. Goodnight." Dick said and I heard his steps coming toward me as I melted into the shadows more and watched Dick pass by without a glance.

"What do you want me to say." Bruce asked after a moment.

"I want you to make it up to the boy, you weren't here for the whole day, it was all he wanted." Alfred's angry voice made my stomach twist a bit and a small smile go on my face before it fell again.

"What do you mean?" Bruce asked and I notice his voice seemed a bit more confused than angry.

"I told him to at least make a wish, you know what he said. He said, ' it's not like it's going to come true'. He looked devastated at the door wishing you would come through it." Alfred said and as he went on his voice sounded devastated too.

It was quiet and it was when I heard a little commotion that I realized they were talking in hushed voices instead and quietly made my way back toward my room.

Climbing back in bed, thinking about Bruce's response. There was something going on and I was determined to find out exactly what was going on.
